Description apache 2018-08-29 14:33:34 UTC
I unmarked kmix volume feedback because I use keyboard shortcut to change volume and don't want this feedback to pop-up when I watch something.

I am talking about this option:
https://docs.kde.org/stable5/en/kdemultimedia/kmix/kmix-configure-general.png

But Plasma 5 doesn't respect / doesn't save this setting. After every volume change with keyboard shortcut the pop-up appears.

I have found that pop-up doesn't appear when I unmarked / unchecked option in system Settings → Workspace behaviour → Display visual feedback for status changes. But this looks like some general setting for whole Plasma.

I think volume feedback option in kmix should respect its state without any other settings.

Perhaps this is related to this bug:

https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=289&t=153661&p=402828#p402824

I suspect that Plasma 5 has general problem with saving some settings, because there a lot of bugs for different element of Plasma not saving settings:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=398008

I will report them separately.

You've said kmix, but opened it against plasma-pa. They are competing sound UIs.

Can you confirm the title of the settings page where you have that option.
Does it say "Configure - KMix" or "Audio Volume Settings - Plasma"]

Please can you also include your:
~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

You're also running plasma-pa.

It could be the OSD is coming from plasma-pa, which would explain why the setting in kmix does nothing.

I don't know what is the difference between kmix and plasma-pa and I don't know which element is responsible for it. I thought they were working together as one sound syystem.
I clicked default sound icon that is in systemtray and I unmarked here volume feedback.
It looks like this. It has plasma in window title.

I can provide any information if you tell me how to.

I don't know if this is important. I changed global keyboard shortcuts:
volume up - Ctrl+up arrow
volume down - Ctrl+down arrow

Ok, that's not kmix.
Comment 7 Thomas Surrel 2018-10-02 21:32:07 UTC
Note that the 'Volume Feedback' option you are talking about does not affect the OSD but a short _sound_ that is played as feedback for the audio volume.
Comment 8 apache 2018-10-03 07:19:24 UTC
@Thomas I don't know what "short _sound_ that is played" you are talking about. I never heard a short sound regardless the volume feedback option was marked or unmarked.

To me this option is (or should be) connected to icon that pop-ups when volume is changed with keyboard shortcut. It is called "volume feedback" which indicates that it has something to do with volume level and not with any system sound event that is play as system notification sound.
Comment 9 Thomas Surrel 2018-10-03 07:33:36 UTC
@apache, I could not tell you for sure why you do not have the sound feedback being played. Maybe the notification sound is too low ? Check in the system settings > Multimedia > Audio Volume > Applications > Notification Sounds.

I was just pointing out that, as of today, this Volume Feedback option toggle the playing of this sound, not the visual feedback.

The only method I know of is to turn off the visual feedbacks entirely (so, not only the volume OSD). You can do that in System Settings > Desktop Behavior > Workspace > Display visual feedback for status changes.
Comment 10 apache 2018-10-03 17:54:41 UTC
Yes. I disabled notification sound. I didn't checked that but that would be odd
if watching something I had a notification sound about changing volume with keyboard shortcut. Volume feedback should not be designed that way.

Volume feedback should be only connected with pop-up not with notification sounds.
