Description avlas 2018-08-27 03:03:53 UTC
Currently both the kwin button and the top menubar get activated by the ALT key. Beyond the aesthetics (it doesn't look very good with both menus open), the two menus may, and frequently overlap, which makes the feature a bit useless.

I would suggest to prioritize the top menubar if it exists, and the kwin button menu otherwise.

Can you please tell what exact shortcuts are you using?

Alt+F3 launches KWin menu ok
Alt+F launches global title menu ok

Operating System: Netrunner Rolling
KDE Plasma Version: 5.13.5
Qt Version: 5.11.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.50.0

Not sure I follow...

I guess my explanation wasn't clear enough, so I try to clarify it further: when using the global menu, if one activates a particular application menu via ALT + underlined_character, that specific menu is triggered both at the globalmenu as well as within the application (via the kwin menu button).

I think this behavior doesn't make much sense both functionally (depending on the application location the menues overlap) and visually (the look and feel of the menues opened in parallel doesn't look good), so I suggest using only the global menu if both the applet and the kwin menu button are available. I think this priority makes sense because one cannot have the global menu applet without the kwin menu button, but the kwin menu button can stand alone.

Let me know if this doesn't clarify the question.

Can reproduce this bug

Correct, sorry. At some point it was that way, but not anymore.

But I think this issue is still valid and needs fixing. Some users, and me for one, use the two menues. In that situation, one of the two needs to be prioritized against the other.

[Personally, I would suggest plasma global menu to be prioritized, but that's not based on any strong reason anymore]

However, it may be easier to disable the functionality of the ALT shortcut in plasma global menu (if the menu is also appearing as a kwin button). In that case, it may make some sense to prioritize the kwin button.

In fact, the ALT shortcut in the kwin button is quite tricky, as one needs to press ALT+letter without visual feedback. To be functional, ALT should open the kwin menu button, otherwise how is the user knowing what letter to press next to open a specific menu?

Thank you for reporting this issue in KDE software. As it has been a while since this issue was reported, can we please ask you to see if you can reproduce the issue with a recent software version?

If you can reproduce the issue, please change the status to "REPORTED" when replying. Thank you!
Comment 9 avlas 2022-12-19 08:07:04 UTC
Yes, I can reproduce the issue. If for instance I press ALT+F, the file menu is activated simultaneously in both the global menu and the hamburger menu.
Comment 10 Nate Graham 2025-01-09 20:33:58 UTC
I can't reproduce it in current git master, which will shortly become Plasma 6.3. Are you still able to reproduce the issue in Plasma 6.2.5 or later? Thanks!
