Testcase: download the pdf from here ("save" function): http://sci-hub.tw/10.1021/cr980401l#

Please observe how these letter combinations have too small space, and run on each other: "ch", "es", "ea".

The chrome browser doesn't have this problem.
OS: FreeBSD
Version: 1.5.0

That's apparently a poppler bug (poppler is the library used by Okular to render pdf files). You can verify this by typing

  pdftocairo -png frenking2000.pdf foo

in a shell and observing that the generated files foo-01.png etc show the same bad behavior.

Can you please file a bug with that information in the poppler bugtracker at

  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler/poppler/issues

When you have done so, please post the bug link here for further reference.
