I use Kate 17.12.3 in XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=ubuntu:GNOME (on Ubuntu 18.04.1). So I have a Gnome Open dialog. When (using Open Recent) I open a file from an SSH server which is currently not connected in Gnome File Manager, Kate behaves as if the file were empty (not giving an error message as it should instead). I suspect it may lead to data loss (if someone indeed connects to the server using Gnome File Manager and saves the file after this). So I mark this bug as "major".
If you use Nautilus to manually mount the server again, is the file intact, or has there actually been data loss?
Intact. But I suspect, it would be loss if I press Ctrl+S after mount.
Could you test that theory after making a backup copy of the file for safety?
