Description jk 2018-08-14 07:46:04 UTC
Eventhough it's not explicitly specified in the documentation, it is expected from digikam to display the version cliked inthe versions tab in the preview area.
As of today, except for the "display permanently" action, nothing happens when clicking on a version.
Expected behaviour would be to actually navigate the different versions of a photo and beeing able to see them in the preview area.

I do not know if I understand the problem correctly. When going over the image in the Versions tab, a small image icon will appear within the line at the top right if the image is not visible in the view. If you click there you will jump to the image.

Here's a licecap of what I have on windows and it's the same on linux:

digiKam 7.0.0 stable release is now published and now available as FlatPak:

https://www.digikam.org/news/2020-07-19-7.0.0_release_announcement/

We need a fresh feedback on this file using this version.

Thanks in advance

Hi and happy new year,

Can you check if problem remain with digiKam 7.5.0 pre-release bundle available
here :

Thanks in advance

Tested on 7.6.0, pretty much the same, but now, even if you have the "always display original pic" option activated, selecting the original pic and the vx in the version tab doesn't do anything...

An icon will appear in the Versions tab when you hover over the row. A click on the icon jumps to the corresponding album/image.

@JK,

What's about this file using current 8.2.0 AppImage Linux bundle ? It's
reproducible ?

https://files.kde.org/digikam/

Note: bundle is now based on Qt 5.15.11 and KDE framework 5.110.

Thanks in advance

Tested with 8.2, doesn't seem to change anything.
Made a licecap of it: https://nxt.hha.fr/index.php/s/idjxrDifkYfcpi6

Did you read my Comment 6? I see the icon in your animation that pops up and you have to click on it.

Sorry, I answered a bit quickly and incompletely.
I do see an icon allowing to toggle each version as "always visible" or not in the image list.
However, when previewing an image, it still doesn't show it (or jump to it) and even-though that's a nice feature, the main idea was to be able to review in the preview each different version you click on. The toggle is a nice bonus as I can then choose to display several different versions of the same picture, but still, not as one would thought this would work.
https://nxt.hha.fr/index.php/s/9EKsPK2p8LwKBCK
For now it's a workaround, allowing to toggle the picture to be displayed, click on the picture, decide whether you want to keep seeing in you grid, then toggle it back off in not. Better than nothing but quite not it I think.
Seems this might be a duplicate of https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=262293
It might also bring back the question of versions storage as in would make sens that only the displayed versions of the pictures would be visible in the main folder. Other versions of pictures would be either hidden or stored in another folder.

I don't mean the bottom icon to turn the original image on and off. But the top icon if the derived image or original image is in another album.

Not present in my case...
As I understand it to use this to store original pictures and in between versions, I would need to make them visible, then move them to another album. The icon would then allow me to jump to these version.
Sounds very convoluted, plus apparently it revert back from preview to thumbnail view, not very practical.

Comment 15 TD 2023-12-20 13:00:20 UTC
Still present in the current 8.2.0 (Win 10 in my case). I save versions in the same folder as the original photo. After editing a photo, I usually only want to see the current edit, so I deselected the option "Always show original images". Sometimes I want to review the changes and have a look at the original photo. But when opening the right sidebar and selecting a version or the original image, the current version is still displayed in the preview and not the selected version as expected.
Comment 16 TD 2023-12-20 13:07:01 UTC
When hovering over the original entry, an icon "show item permanently" appears, but that is not what I want (guess it's the same for the author of that bug report). I expect to see the version displayed in the preview that I select, be it a version or the original. At the moment the selection in the version tab does nothing.

The overlay icon for jumping to the album/image only appears for the versioned image if it is in another album. otherwise a click causes the view to scroll to the versioned image.

That is not my problem / the bug I'm talking about. I try to be more precise:

1) Let's say there is an original photo (Image1.jpg) and an edited version (Image1_v1.jpg). Both images are in the same album / folder.
2) After editing a photo, I usually only want to see the current edit, so I deselected the option "Always show original images".
3) Thumbnail mode and preview mode now only displays the edited version (v1).
4) When I preview this versioned photo (same in thumbnails mode), the statusbar says "Image1_v1.jpg", digiKam properties say "versioned: yes".
5) Now I open the versions tab from the right sidebar. In the version list, I can see the original file and the current edit.
6) BUG: I select the list entry with the original file and expect to see the original file in full preview, but nothing changes. Statusbar still displays "Image1_v1.jpg" and the preview picture is the same current version.
(Same in Thumbnail mode, the thumbnail shown is also only "Image1_v1.jpg".

I think this should be fixed soon, unless the versions tab was designed to be just informative without function (but in that case the list doesn't need to be "selectable".
