the brushes don't work and I've tried everything I can do to reset the program

* Which version of Krita are you using? 4.0.0 like you put in the subject or 4.1.1 like you put in the version field?
* Have you created an image before trying to paint?
* Are you using a drawing tablet like a wacom, and if so, which one?
* Does it make a difference if you disable canvas gpu acceleration in the settings dialog?
