When opening or creating a new canvas, kwin improperly enough to have to be restarted again manually, using option ‘—replace’. Opengl version used by kwin makes no difference to this issue. This problem does not occur when opengl for acceleration is turned off in preferences.
Can you paste some of the info noted in help->information for bugreports? Because this does not happen for me on Kubuntu 17.10, and I imagine that the other kde using devs would've said something if it happened to them :)
Apart from that, which Linux distribution are you using and which version of kwin?
Sorry for the lack of info. Hopefully, this will help.
