Description Tom 2018-05-20 14:44:16 UTC
From the alternative tool "Shutter" I was regularly used the "copy to clipboard" function to copy a screen to my Thunderbird mails.

In Spectacle, there is a button "Copy to clipboard" (German: "In die Zwischenablage kopieren"), but this is apparently not working in

Spectacle 18.04.0
on debian 10 buster.

Hm, I'm actually unable to paste to Thunderbird both from Spectacle and Shutter.

Please let us know:
- How are you trying to paste to Thunderbird? (I tried Ctrl+V.)
- Is pasting from Shutter still working? (Does not work for me.)
- Can you paste from Shutter to GIMP? (Works for me.)
- Can you paste from Spectacle to GIMP? (Works for me.)
- Do you keep Spectacle open while trying to paste? (I do, otherwise you have to uncheck "Ignore images" in Klipper's settings.)

In Spectacle: Button "In die Zwischenablage kopieren"
In TB:
1. Right mouse-click > Paste ; or
2. Shift-Einfügen

> - Is pasting from Shutter still working? (Does not work for me.)
No, because Shutter is not avaliable for debian 10. This was the reason why I installed Spectacle

> - Can you paste from Shutter to GIMP? (Works for me.)
See above (no Shutter for debian 10

> - Can you paste from Spectacle to GIMP? (Works for me.)
No. Message: "Clipboard does not contain data"

> - Do you keep Spectacle open while trying to paste? (I do, otherwise you

Yes, Spectacle stays open.

What doe you mean with "Klipper's settings" ?
Comment 3 null 2018-05-20 16:46:18 UTC
Well, we need a way to distinguish between a general clipboard problem with your system or Thunderbird, and something specific to Spectacle. Can you try to open an image in Firefox, select "Copy Image" in the context menu and paste into GIMP and Thunderbird?

BTW, I now can paste from Spectacle and elsewhere to Thunderbird after enabling "Compose messages in HTML format" under "Account Settings → Composition".

> What do you mean with "Klipper's settings" ?
Klipper is Plasma's clipboard manager applet, which you'll find in the system tray. Right-clicking on it will offer "Configure Clipboard". But perhaps you are not running even running Plasma, or you are using another clipboard manager?

Confirmed: this works (Mozilla -> TB; Mozilla -> GIMP)

This setting _was_ and _is_ activated.

However, I _just_ found this:

I _recently_ disabled (as mitigation/ad-hoc solution to #efail issues) in TB the _VIEW_ Setting from HTML or SIMPLIFIED HTML to TEXTONLY.

Summary:

1. Image pasting from MOZILLA is not possible for TEXTONLY, but is possible when HTML or SIMPLIFIED HTML is selected.
2. Image pasting from SPECTACLE is not possible in any of the three selections.

Hm, not sure what to do now, because I cannot reproduce the problem.

Maybe that question is too trivial to ask, but do you get the message "The screenshot has been copied to the clipboard." after clicking on "Copy To Clipboard" in Spectacle?

> perhaps you are not even running Plasma, or you are using another
> clipboard manager?
Could you tell us what desktop environment you are using and whether the clipboard applet is running?

You can also try with a new user to eliminate any problem with your local configuration or non-standard software.

No.

No message: after having clicked the button, Spectacle simply closes. I thought that this is the expected behaviour.

Now I'm confused. First you say Spectacle stays open:

>> - Do you keep Spectacle open while trying to paste? (I do, otherwise you
>> have to uncheck "Ignore images" in Klipper's settings.)
> Yes, Spectacle stays open.

And now you say it closes:
> after having clicked the button, Spectacle simply closes.

I guess you checked "Quit after Save or Copy"?

Yesssss, you've got it!
Indeed, this box was checked. Immediately when I unchecked the box, copy to clipboard and pasting into Thunderbird ==> works. Hurra!

Pls. feel free to close this issue, if you think this is expected behaviour.

In my view, the "Copy to clipboard" should work independently from the setting of this checkbox.

At least, the text and button should be removed, or greyed out, because this function does not work if the checkbox is activated.
Comment 9 Tom 2018-05-20 20:05:19 UTC
And, in addition, I now saw a blueish text confirming that the image was copied to clipboard.
Comment 10 null 2018-05-20 20:06:40 UTC
Closing now, because you have to uncheck "Ignore images" in Klipper's settings for this to work if you checked "Quit after Save or Copy" in Spectacle.

I guess we should add some kind of warning message to the copy button regarding this (unfortunate) obstacle.

(See the duplicate for more information why it behaves this way.)
