If I enable 'view > show word count', no word count is shown in the status bar. However, word count works in Kate, so it does not seem to be an editor bug per se.
Recently, there was a change in Kate to make word count a global preference. The corresponding option shows up in settings > configure Kile > editor > appearance > advanced. However, enabling the option doesn't show the word count on the status bar, as reported earlier.

The relevant setting is now in Settings > configure Kile > editor > general. The workd count is still not shown in the status bar when this is enabled.
