Description bugreporter11 2018-05-07 23:15:45 UTC
Generally, I do not keep Preview enabled for most of my folders. After this recent update (18.04.0), Previews are now enabled by default for all folders. I wish to return to the prior behavior.

I'm running KDE on Arch. Here's some system info:

    plasmashell --version: plasmashell 5.12.5
    dolphin --version: dolphin 18.04.0
    Linux 4.16.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Apr 30 12:30:03 UTC 2018 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Is this recent change related to the following bug?
Bug 338492 "File icon previews should be turned on for all icon types by default"
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=338492

I personally disagree that file icon previews should be turned on for all icon types by default.

However, if that is the new Dolphin default, I hope there is a setting in Dolphin (or a config file) that will let me revert to the prior default. If so, where do I find it?

Any additional information about this change is appreciated.

Thanks

Hello @bugreporter11! We are sorry that this change of behavior has caused confusion and issues for you. This change was made to help regular users who might not have been aware of the Preview functionality of Dolphin and was considered a sane default by all developers. If you would like to revert this change and toggle previews off, please follow these steps:
1. Click on the hamburger icon in the top bar if you haven't enabled the menu bar. If you did, click on "View".
2. Select the option "Adjust view properties"
3. Now, you may check off the box "Show previews"
4. Choose if you want to apply this setting to all folders or only the current one & select "Use these view properties as default"

After clicking OK, your view properties should now be changed and Previews will no longer show up unless you enable them explicitly :) I am going to close this bug now, but please reopen the report if these steps somehow do not work for you.

Hello Julian. Thank you for the great explanation. In Dolphin's General Settings > Behavior | View I use "Remember properties for each folder". I have a wide variety of settings for different folders. Some are sorted by name and others are sorted by date. Some show hidden files, some don't. I even have a few folders where previews are shown.

To use the solution you described, I plan to follow these steps:

 follow these steps:
1. Click on the hamburger icon in the top bar if you haven't enabled the menu bar. If you did, click on "View".
2. Select the option "Adjust view properties"
3. Now, you may check off the box "Show previews"
4. Choose apply this setting to all folders & select "Use these view properties as default"

Given that this dialog includes mandatory settings for sorting and view mode, I assume that I will lose my existing unique per-folder sorting and view mode settings.

If my guess is correct, this means that I will either have to go to each folder (hundreds of them) and turn off previews individually, or I will have to reset all folders to uniform view properties and then go to each folder individually to restore my unique per-folder view properties.

After using Dolphin for years, I have invested a fair amount of time in achieving just the right customized view properties for each of my folders. This change in the default preview setting looks like it will cost me some hours of time to get back to where I was, whether I use the proposed steps or not.

On the other hand, if there is indeed a way to turn off previews but not alter any of my other unique per-folder view properties, please let me know. Thank you.

There should indeed be a way to do this as the settings are stored in a .directory file in the respective folder, but I currently do not have the time to do this. If you are able to wait for a week, I can probably make a small bash script to accomplish this.

Hello Julian. Yes, I can wait a week. Your solution of a bash script is a
fantastic idea. That will be very helpful!
