Debian system information

Hi, I'm sharing what could be a Debian-only issue since I last updated my system yesterday. I haven't been able to post a Debian bug report today so I'm deciding to create this issue here because right now Amarok is literally broken as a player on Debian testing (buster), so I thought I had to let someone know...

Thanks for the great player, hope this can be resolved soon, if there's anything to be done about it (other than by the Debian maintainers)!

# Expected behaviour / actual behaviour

Up until my updating the system yesterday, Amarok was working perfectly. After the update, it cannot play any music files or remote streams anymore.

Other players seem to work fine, so it's definitely not a system issue (VLC, mplayer...).

Upon trying to play a playlist item (double click, Enter or pressing the play button, from the tray icon, etc...) nothing happens (except the play button will remain toggled if I click it - but not from any other action). There isn't any error message or console output and I'm not sure if Amarok has a log file at all.

GStreamer is the only backend shown for me for Phonon so looks like changing backends is not an option.

This report is pretty much a copy paste to the one I made for Clementine https://github.com/clementine-player/Clementine/issues/6039

The fact both players depend on GStreamer shows the problem is with that common package, most likely, but I'd appreciate if anyone could help ascertain the nature of the bug so a proper bug report can be made (perhaps to GStreamer maintainers directly). Thanks!

clementine uses gstreamer directly, amarok uses phonon (which can use a gstreamer backend). Indeed, the common piece is gstreamer, which isn't a kde product, so isn't appropriate to track here (at bugs.kde.org).

Likely the most appropriate places is reporting the issue to your distribution (or gstreamer upstream if you have evidence the problem lies there)

Thank you. Unfortunately Debian's reportbug tool has a bit of a bug itself right now so I can't report it. I tried sending an email to GStreamer's debian mailing list but I think it's being closed down too, or moved, I don't know (something to that effect was announced this month, I believe).

Which is why I thought a report here would be useful in case someone could actually look into it. Oh well, thanks anyway.

BTW, you appear to still be using Amarok 2.8, which is now closed for reports, please use Amarok 2.9 instead.
Comment 5 tukkek 2018-04-10 01:53:22 UTC
I am using 2.8 because that's the latest version in any official Debian repository... Maybe you should coordinate to make sure 2.9 is uploaded instead.

We release, it is up to the distribution packagers to provide packages of new releases. You need to take this to your distribution.
