Krita crashes without warning to previous save, losing work. No other information available. Clean install Win10.. no other issues on computer that I know of. I was just using Digital brush in FREE mode

Hi,

There obviously be something different on your system compared to the system of the users who haven't encountered a crash yet. So could you please try to follow the instructions at

https://docs.krita.org/Dr._Mingw_debugger

And get a crash log? We really cannot do anyhthing without more information.

I think it was caused by saving to a slow drive. Am now saving to my main SSD C drive and no crashes yet.

definitely HAS made a difference saving to SSD drive. I had repeated crashes within an hour on old drive, losing all work
unless I was able to save successfully. The SSD saves, were quick and effortless without crashes. The old drive is slow to
spin up from sleep.. could be this is an issue for Krita?

Yes... Though it might be hard to test. Maybe I could try with an external disk, that should be slow enough, or an SSD.

Time for me to upgrade the drive, obviously! Keep up the good work. Thanks

Well... It shouldn't crash. Dmitry is looking into it.

I have just checked Krita 4.0 for the following cases:

1) On Linux: save a huge file to SSHFS-mounted directory. Works fine. If the I have no access to the destination directory, error message (not very descriptive) shows up.

2) On Windows: save a huge file to a network drive. Works fine. Slowly, but saves.

3) On Windows: save a file into the directory, where I have no write access. Fails with not very descriptive error message, but no crash happens.

So I cannot reproduce that :(

Perhaps you aren't using a 10 year old drive as the test drive.. perhaps
its
a waste of time.. I'll just buy a new drive!
Thanks anyway.

KLOOLUS LOAD SCREEN 1.02.kra

Actually, I don’t think it is my hard drives, because same thing happened when saving to my SSD main C: Save as “new name”, it seems to save, then bombs out
And returns to the previous save. On attempting to reload the new save, it doesn’t appear to have been saved, because the Load menu doesn’t see it.
However, after exiting Krita, and checking in Explorer, the new file is indeed there. Double clicking the new save file opens it in Krita without issue.
Could it be a problem with this image file, which was started with a previous version of Krita? I am returning to Krita after a years break. I’m attaching my picture files.

I have just tested both your files on Linux and Windows, on official Krita 4.0 builds and they seem to save fine...

Could you please follow this manual and provide us with a backtrace of the crash that happens after saving?

Just checked the Krita AppData.. there is no crash log.. Krita exits the current save and loads the previous save, but I’m unsure if it is technically a “crash”, or just a Runtime Error. AppData/Local/Krita/cache/qmlcache. The file does not appear to be a crash log. I’ll watch it further and report when I have something more definitive.

Ok, so same bug, different activity. ie.. drawing on line art layer with a
number of lines drawn.. started a new line at top edge of artwork, and all
new artwork disappears back to the last save.
I had already adjusted the memory availability of Krita to a very generous
level (I have 32gigs DDR4). Saves have not caused this issue since the
memory adjustment and since saving to my SSD on C drive.
I have the latest Wacom driver for my Intuos PTK840 A4 tablet.

An update to my last bug report-: in Configure Krita/Performance.. I set
available memory at a very generous 26 gig (out of my 32gig ddr4)
and Internal Pool at 20%, and with a Swap File size of 16gig
Since this adjustment, I have had no crashes of this type.. saves ok- no
loss of data.

Hi, Mr H Green!

What memory limit you had before you changed these settings? (just checking what could cause it)

It never occurred to me to check the memory limit on installing Krita
So it was set to whatever Krita’s default is on first install. I have increased it significantly.. though I did not check what the setting was, I recall it was low.

Okay, then I think the problem was that it was not enough memory for Krita to make a detached copy of the image for the save operation.

I will close the bug, if you happen to see that again, please reopen the bug! :)
