This seems like a regression or something cause this works fine in 3.3 when you make a range selection ,especially if you dont include the first frames , the playback calculates the whole animation instead of just the range.
Hi, Bollebib! Could you check if this bug is still reproducible in nightly builds? It might be related to bug 392233, because I cannot reproduce it in master :(
