additional multimedia codec required
an application is requesting additional multimedia codecs

sometimes I get this popup message and there is no way to close it as it keeps popping up and plasmashell starts eating up all the memory and high CPU usage

the only fix is a restart.

Linux lenovo-p50 4.14.14-300.fc27.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Jan 19 13:19:54 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I think it set to use x11

AFAIK Plasma doesn't deal with the install of multimedia codecs. This must be an issue with Fedora.
Comment 2 Krasi Georgiev 2018-03-02 22:29:56 UTC
to be honest when this message pops up I am not even trying to watch anything or start any application so I don't think it has anything to do with multimedia codecs

I think the same thing happened when I was using gnome, but I am not sure where to report this issues.
Comment 3 Øystein Steffensen-Alværvik 2018-03-02 22:34:21 UTC
This would be the place to start: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/

Beware that it's always smart to try to search for a duplicate bug before you report another one; it saves time for the developers and bug triagers.

Thanks , yes I always search for duplicates.

even found this one

here is the bug against fedora for anyone to follow up

Comment 5 Nate Graham 2018-03-03 05:00:34 UTC
This isn't a plasma pop-up; it's from some other app. In the future, a screenshot showing the issue would be helpful.

Here it is, when I click "Find Software" another message pops up - "Software crashed."

Rex, do you recognize the notification from comment #6?
Comment 8 Rex Dieter 2018-03-30 13:34:39 UTC
If user is running a kde/kf5 application, it could be from phonon, that supports auto-installing codecs on demand (gtk applications include a similar feature, but then it obviously doesn't go through phonon).

Both apper and gnome-software provide the dbus interface to doing the actual work (and rfe to get plasma-discover to support this, see bug #377646)

if I recall, last I tested apper, it didn't work quite right unfortunately (I think due to PK changing API/interface awhile back, and apper not adapting to it)
Comment 9 Krasi Georgiev 2018-03-30 15:53:04 UTC
btw after this message plasma-shell starts consuming a lot of CPU and the only way to put it pack to normal is
killall plasmashell #to stop it
kstart plasmashell #to restart it
Comment 10 Rex Dieter 2018-04-02 17:54:32 UTC
I idea which app(s) are requesting the additional codecs? (when plasma becomes unresponsive, I'm guessing because it may be getting DOS'd from too many such calls in a short period of time).
Comment 11 Krasi Georgiev 2018-04-02 20:13:59 UTC
It happens randomly, but I think most of the time when I delete a file in Dolphin.
and I think DOS is exactly what happens.
Comment 12 Krasi Georgiev 2018-04-03 09:58:24 UTC
I can confirm that it happens most definitely when I delete a file.
Comment 13 Krasi Georgiev 2018-04-13 19:16:17 UTC
another way to reproduce is by force closing an app

I have mailspring installed and when I force close all instantes of mailspring from KSysGurad it triggers the same error.
Comment 14 Krasi Georgiev 2018-05-02 09:42:58 UTC
Just now the same DOS was triggered by kde_powerdevil. basically just disconnected the power adaptor and started getting all these messages again.
Comment 15 Krasi Georgiev 2018-05-06 08:52:15 UTC
Can you give me some idea where would be the best place/component to report this bug as I am a bit lost here.
Comment 16 Christoph Feck 2018-05-31 23:10:15 UTC
I suggest to ask in a forum of your distribution how to install the missing codecs.

If I understand it correctly, when you get a message box asking a question, also a sound should play. If your audio codecs are not setup correctly, you will not get a sound, but this popup instead.
