So you can show a little icon that shows you an application makes sound. Would be really cool if you could have scroll up and down that will change the volume for that application only (is like doing the same over the audio widget). I don't really use the scroll through opened application myself. I guess you could keep both, or choose one.
Since a while, the volume symbol is shown for each application. It would make sense to do such volume scrolling on this symbol, like it is the case for the system tray.
Yeah, you could only be using one of those features at a time, or else they would conflict. Making the user aim for the symbol itself is probably a no-go because of how small it is. That would be an exercise in frustration.

Mmh, the user has to aim for the mute button anyway if they want to mute it, so why would it be frustrating for them to implement the scroll feature? Also, @Nate if have noticed that sometimes this icon is way to small (sometimes if a screen is attached for example). Maybe you are affected by this? I have attached a picture on how it looks for me.
