Description Gregor Mi 2018-02-10 09:59:02 UTC
In 17.12.0 the "Document Preview" plugin is part of Kate. I wonder if the Markdown Preview Plugin is also supposed to be shipped with Kate, because it does not show up in the list of plugins and therefore for Markdown files there is no preview.

The KMarkdownWebView software is released not as part of the KDE Applications release bundle like Kate, but developed and released on a separate cycle of its own.
KMarkdownWebView currently provides a KParts plugin and a KIO thumbnail generator plugin, so is not just targetting Kate, but any software using KParts infrastructure (e.g. Ark & Krusader) or the KIO thumbnail system.

So while the KMarkdownWebView KParts plugin is useful for some in Kate and its preview plugin, it is not the only usage combination, bundling KMarkdownWebView with Kate when it comes to source releases is not needed but would create new dependencies.

If "to be shipped with Kate" though means coming pre-installed with packages in Linux distributions, that might make sense. The appstream metadata of KMarkdownWebView actually recommends itself for Kate and some others. But this is something to ask the packagers for the respective distribvutions, to add some kind of "Recommends KMarkdownWebView" to the Kate package or "Recommends itself for Kate" to the KMarkdownWebView package, so it gets co-installed automatically.

Same also for the application bundle installer, either AppImage or the ones for other operating systems, like MS Windows or macOS, this would be a question for the app bundle creators. If your bug report is actually about that, please reopen the bug, rename the title to mention the app bundles and move the bug to, hm..., best to the "General" component, as I could not find where bugs for Kate app bundles should be filed, the maintainers of the "General" component bug reports might know and will process it further :)

Thanks for the detailed response. I changed the bug accordingly.

I am on openSUSE Tumbleweed.

After

$ sudo zypper in kmarkdownwebview

the markdown preview works! :)

It seems though that the kmarkdownwebview is not in the list of recommended packages for kate:

$ zypper info --recommends kate

Dear user, this wish list item is now closed, as it wasn't touched in the last year and no contributor stepped up to implement it.

The Kate/KTextEditor team is small and we can just try to keep up with fixing bugs.

Therefore wishes that show no activity for a years or more will be closed from now on to keep at least a bit overview about 'current' wishs of the users.
If you want your feature to be implemented, please step up to provide some patch for it.

If you think it is really needed, you can reopen your request, but keep in mind,
if no new good arguments are made and no people get attracted to help out to implement it,
it will expire in a year again.

We have a nice website https://kate-editor.org that provides all the information needed to contribute, please make use of it.

Patches can be handed in via https://phabricator.kde.org/differential/

Greetings
Christoph Cullmann
