Description uwestoehr 2017-12-30 15:22:06 UTC
- open the main map (top toolbar)
- close the left and the right sidebar

Now there is only the map with some images displayed in the map

- now open a map in the left sidebar

result: the images disappeared unexpectedly from the main map

- now close the left sidebar by pressing on the map toolbar button

result: the images are still no more shown in the main map

- now open the album in the left sidebar
- change in the top toolbar to preview images

result: you get an empty screen as if the album is empty. The only way to get the images back I found is to reload the album.

With the left sidebar you can search images. If you open the map on the left side you can draw a rectangle over the map, all images within these rectangle coordinates will now be displayed. This behavior is not a bug. I recommend you in case of doubt the question to post in the user mailing list. Other users can then give you tips and advice. I close the bug as INVALID.

> If you open the map on the left side you can draw a rectangle over the map,

Please re-read my bug description. I know the differences of the sidebar.

The bug is that the images disappear from the main map just by opening the side bar and closing it subsequently without searching anything.

It cannot be correct that I have to reload the whole album to be able to see it again.

The moment you open the left sidebar, for example the map, you start a search. If no images are found, none will appear on the big map. You'll have to change the search again or do another search or choose a physical album. It is not a bug.

That is extremely unintuitive. In no program I know a search is automatically started just by opening a search widget/window. One has to enter something and start the search explicitly.

I mean of course it cannot find anything because I did not search for something yet. I just opened the map and then switched to the album in the left sidebar because the album was what i actually really wanted. So just by not clicking on the right toolbar button, I am kicked out? (it cost me a restart just be be able to continue my presentation). That is no good UI.

No program perform a search while using a GUI element. Really ??? In a web interface also ? Are you sure ?

All view in left sidebar perform an operation in database. The elements from collections are registered in database and we process a request in database to adjust the contents to show. This depend of elements selected everywhere.

Why to use a database ? To speed up search processing of course. This is the goal of a database... This is the lead computer science component used everywhere, event if you don't know that it's processed in background.

So, not a good GUI : certainly not...

Sure. Tell me a program that behaves like digiKam please?

I don't like to judge how things are done in the background. As a user I only see the GUI and its behavior. And when I am in the middle of a presentation and just because of an accident click on another toolbar button than desired lets my images disappear and I have to restart digiKam to be able to continue my presentation cannot be correct.
(You can imagine what the audience was thinking. That I am a noob and/or that digiKam is not suitable for a proper location-based photo presentation.)
