Description Andres Betts 2017-12-01 16:08:38 UTC
For some reason entering the password into the wifi module in the system tray works but then you also get a system dialog to enter the wifi password again. You are asked for the password twice. There are no hints as to why this is.

Expected behavior: enter password in system tray only

If there is a second prompt to enter the wifi password, explain why you are asking for it a second time.
Comment 1 Jonathan Riddell 2017-12-01 16:16:05 UTC
This only happens on the live image in my experience, maybe it's missing kwalletd or something
Comment 2 Nate Graham 2017-12-04 16:14:14 UTC
I thought Bug 377473 was tracking the same issue, but now I'm not sure anymore. Jonathan?
Comment 3 Jonathan Riddell 2017-12-04 16:19:49 UTC
No I don't think they're related. This only happens on the live image from Neon so is likely to be something to do with what we do there, or at least limited to first time a user is run
Comment 4 Nate Graham 2017-12-04 16:21:53 UTC
I know I've seen reports of this outside the Neon live session too. If this bug tracks fixing it in Neon, I think we still need a bug tracking the general case.

We don't see this issue in Kubuntu because KWallet is enabled by default without a distinct password (that is, it uses the user's login password by default). But outside of this situation, it seems pretty widespread.

Hello,

It happen on Kubuntu 17.10 too. I was about to pass an exam, a powerpoint presentation, so the examiner spelled me the wifi password and after pressing ok an other windows ask for the wifi password! Quite embarrassing...

Jonathan, is there anything I can do to help you investigate this issue?

As above from me. Would like to get this solved for Kubuntu and Neon based on 18.04 base.

Isn't this fixed? I didn't have it anymore on master.
Comment 9 Jan Grulich 2018-01-18 08:00:38 UTC
I think that this one and bug 377473 are related. My guess is still there is a broken configuration of KWallet. If you try to connect to an unknown wireless network, you get a dialog in the applet itself and we then call NM::addAndActivateConnection(params), which adds a new connection and attempts to save the password to KWallet. If KWallet is not working then the password is not saved and later on if NM tries to activate the connection it asks for the password, because we told to NM it is saved on our side, but actually it cannot be found in KWallet and our deamon then prompts for the password. I haven't been able to reproduce this bug neither bug 377473.

Oh, thank you so much for the link to NM bug, it indeed looks like this is causing this problem.

Oh how lovely it will be to have this fixed!
Comment 19 Nowshed H. Imran 2018-02-23 16:00:35 UTC
Yes, the choice is between encrypted password vs usability. What Linux people choose is obvious.
Comment 20 onitake 2018-02-23 17:52:41 UTC
Does this mean the bug has been solved in NetworkManager?
If not, I don't think it makes sense to close the bug report now, as it's still affecting plasma-nm users.
Comment 21 Nate Graham 2018-02-23 18:13:36 UTC
Yes, it has been fixed in NetworkManager.

After networkmanager 1.10.6 update in arch the problem is solved. Good job guys.

Not resolved.

NetworkManager 1.12.2
plasma-nm 5.12.6
networkmanager-qt 5.48.0

1) Click on new Wi-fi network
2) Enter password
3) kded will ask you to create a wallet, refuse it
4) kded will ask you to create a wallet again, refuse it
5) kde will ask you to provide a password to wifi connection (wtf, i just entered it)
6) kded will ask you to create a wallet _third_ time, refuse it

Oleg, that sounds like a different problem. This bug was seen when using KWallet, not when it was being refused. Can you file a new bug for your issue? Thanks!
