the selections are there but they don't show up with either marching ants or mask display mode

Please also do this from Krita: On the menu bar, select "Help"->"Show system information for bug reports", then copy the contents and paste them in your reply.

You can try updating the graphics driver, but since your graphics chipset is pretty ancient it might not help. (This might be the latest driver, install at your own risk: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/22521/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerator-Driver-Windows-7-64-Windows-Vista-64-exe-?v=t ) If that really does not work, go to "Configure Krita" and in "Display" section untick "Canvas Graphics Acceleration".
