I could not find a way to get to the S/W originators so I did a re-install of kde*, plasma* and plymouth* after trying to use "apt-get build-dep" on the various mismatched kde debug and plasma stuff which crashed the boot. Very depressing. I can no longer boot plasma at all, and am now in a gnome gui desktop. (Better than nothing) My desire was to run kubuntu with the plasma desktop on 16.04.3. Any suggestions?
Upgrades now work because I did the following: I decided to continue with the updates and did: apt-get install --reinstall --install-suggests plasma* This install went OK and when it asked for the choice of lightdm or sddm, this time I chose lightdm. Although this dm continues to ask for login whereas I did not need to previously (I had set it that way) many of the previous problems (especially updates) have resolved. kde_X11 continues to crash often whenever a window already on screen is overwritten and then the dm has to redraw it behind the new window. The larger the windows, the more likely it is to happen.
apt-get install --reinstall --install-suggests plasma-desktop is what worked. Some packages could not be installed.
