I have a single monitor connected to my desktop via DVI. My desktop also outputs HDMI to my audio receiver which I also send back from the receiver to that single monitor. When I log into plasma and open an application, nothing shows and I realize it went to my "2nd" display (even though I still only use that 1 monitor). I switch my monitor to the HDMI input and see that application. I go to the "Displays" in "System Settings" and click "Unify Outputs". Then I can switch back to my DVI and work as usual. Logging out/rebooting has me doing that all over again. Let me cut you off at the pass with your question "why don't you just use HDMI?". There are issues I won't delve into and is not going to solve the actual problem of saving the "unifying" setting. Focus on the problem. This seems to be a longstanding issue (183143, 185112, 270655, 372511) that has yet to be resolved.
Ugh, this happened every time when I turned on my receiver (several times so far. normally using headphones), but now that I tried to take the time to take note of the steps I'd take to encounter this issue, it seems to be sticking. Two things I've noticed though is that at the login screen, the password field normally gets immediate focus when I have a single-display (receiver off), but when I turn on my receiver, I have to click in the password box. The other thing is in the System Settings->Displays, the displays look to be unified (single display graphic but both displays listed under Primary Display), but the "Unify Outputs" button is labeled as that rather than "Break Unify".
Can you try again in Plasma 5.25? We did a bunch of multimonitor work and hopefully it should be acting better there. Thanks!
