The summary says it all. I thought I filed this before but couldn't find it here.
Works OK here on a variety of open/libre office files. Using: Dolphin 17.08.1 kde-odf-thumbnail 1.0.0-5.4 (Plasma 5.11.0 Frameworks 5.38.0 Qt 5.9.1) Have you got the package "kde-odf-thumbnail" installed? Are (Dolphin) Previews enabled for ODF files? Settings - Configure Dolphin - General - Previews.
If you don't have kde-odf-thumbnail installed, then this would be an issue with the distro in question--here Neon. In that case I would recommend filing a bug against Neon requesting that kde-odf-thumbnail be installed by default, or made a hard dependency of libreoffice. I am working on a patch to automatically enable all available preview modes in https://phabricator.kde.org/D7440
I've tested this in Neon, Maui Linux and Mint KDE 18.2 and all have the same problem. kde-odf-thumbnail doesn't appear Synaptic. "I would recommend filing a bug against Neon requesting that kde-odf-thumbnail be installed by default, or made a hard dependency of libreoffice." I thought I was doing that here. Sorry, I'm new to filing bug reports. Is there anyway I can install it? Thanks for your time. JR
No worries, we were all n00bs at one point. :) The package name may be something different. You might try `apt search thumbnail | grep -i odf` to see if you can find it. This is the component for Dolphin. A bug requesting packaging changes in KDE Neon would need to be filed against "neon".
The search only responded with "WARNING: apt does not have a stable CLI interface. Use with caution in scripts." PS: I filed a bug report under Neon.
Looks like the package is named "kde-thumbnailer-openoffice". But apparently it's in the universe repo, so you need to enable that first: `sudo add-apt-repository universe` For more info, see https://packages.ubuntu.com/zesty/kde-thumbnailer-openoffice
After enabling the universe repo and installing kde-thumbnailer-openoffice, can you let me know if that resolves the issue for you?
I have a script (more like a simple text file) that I use to install my favorite apps after a new installation and kde-thumbnailer-openoffice is included. I googled it a few weeks ago when I first noticed the problem. It only works with KDE 3 and 4.x. There's something new in Plasma 5 that causes it not to work.
Ah, okay. Looking over https://store.kde.org/content/show.php/OpenOffice.org+Thumbnail+plugin?content=110864, it appears that Plasma 5 incompatibility is a known issue, that some kind soul has patched it to work, and that his patch has been incorporated into the openSUSE package: https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/KDE:Extra/kde-odf-thumbnail/port-to-kf5.patch?expand=1 You might try contacting the Ubuntu package maintainer (which you can find at https://packages.ubuntu.com/zesty/kde-thumbnailer-openoffice) or the original creator (https://www.opendesktop.org/member/136340/) and asking any of them to incorporate the patch so that the package works with Plasma 5. Either way, this isn't a KDE issue. Closing.
Okay. I just filed a bug report with the Ubuntu group. I use LibreOffice daily for writing books, creating graphics, advertisments, business cards, lesson plans, etc... and have many versions of these files going back to 2009 that I reuse and update almost everyday. The only way of quickly and easily finding what I need is with the thumbnails. I've been a KDE user for over six years and absolutely love Neon, but can't use it because of this issue. Thanks again for your time.
Can you provide a link to that bug report so we can track it?
