Description jailbreakme 2017-09-29 08:08:22 UTC
When I format USB them it formats it in something really strange filesystem! When I Upload a movie to it, it uploads it, shows it in the USB drive everything looks OK, but When I instert it in my DVD player it shows an empty USB drive! Please fix it. Don't have this problem on any other Linux Distro. (Now using Mate ubuntu and everything works great).

I don't think your USB is bricked, it shouldn't be possible to brick USB from Linux userspace.

Which file systems have you used to format your USB? You need to check what your DVD players supports, most likely it should be FAT32, maybe NTFS or maybe even exFAT.

What did you do in Mate to make it work?

Please provide the requested info so that we can triage the bug. How did you format it? What file system did you choose? Etc.

By Bricked I mean that it doesn't show the movies on my DVD, only when I plug it on my Laptop.

I've tried to format it in different ways. Disks - Format.

Then from the Discovery I install KDE Disk management or something like that.

Format it with it - same thing.

Then with Gparted - same thing.

So I gave up and made me Ubuntu mate with StartUp disk Creator.

Here on Mate I formated it the same way I usually do - Disks - choose the USB - Format.

Then everything works - I put the movies on my USB - plug it in the DVD and bummmm the movies are there ready to play (everything working after doing the same thing on KDE Neon and Mate (Mint/Ubuntu). Never had this problem on another distro.

Fat32 - but still not working.
On Windows (when I used it - always formated it to Fat32 i think this is the only my DVD can read) and never had a problem.

Could it be that in one case you used MBR partition table and GPT in the other case.

Fat32 should indeed be the good choice for DVD player.

Or maybe your DVD player gets confused by any partition table? You can try testing from the command line:

mkfs.fat -F32 -I -v /dev/sdb
(Make sure your usb is indeed detected as /dev/sdb before running this command, if not adjust the letter)
Comment 8 jailbreakme 2017-10-04 15:49:36 UTC
Not sure why. I've tried to make it with Gpated with new table. Pretty much tried everything, no success.

Any chance to add the USB formatter and USB writter like in the Mint distro for easier tasks? Never had a problem with them.
But the strangest thing is never had a problem on other distros with Disks - format...
I will install again KDE Neon and will try your suggestion.
Comment 9 Andrius Štikonas 2017-10-04 16:09:34 UTC
Well, KDE has floppy formatter (KFloppy) but nobody produced the one for USB... But that would be another program, not partition manager. Although, kpmcore library can be reused if somebody decides to write usb formatter.

Anyway, it looks like you just need to find out which configuration is accepted by your DVD player. Unfortunately, as you can see they are often quite picky. These devices often don't accept what is perfectly valid partitioning on PCs. A bit similar to codecs, PCs can decode way more video codecs than TVs, so if you encode something for TV, it is similarly annoying.

Reading the initial description it is also possible that the USB stick was not correctly unmounted before it got removed.
