It's quite hard to explain the bug but here's what happens: Normally, systray icons have some pop-up on left-button click, e.g. Device Notifier. When I insert SD card, so a Device Notifier pops up showing possible actions and at the same time I switch desktops, the pop-up disappears and will not return when clicked. The only visible clue is a tiny blue bar over the Device Notifier icon. All systray pop-ups stop working, so this is not limited to Device Notifier, just an example. I use "slide" as desktop switch effect in kwin. Only work-around I've found so far is restarting plasmashell.
is the little top-right pin icon enabled?
No, I hardly ever touch that.
Same here. But it's not limited to systray icons. Problem affects any plasma app (application launcher, application menu, clipboard, ...), regardless of whether it's located in the panel or on the desktop. In addition to restarting plasma shell, removing and re-adding the app in question also works (but is tedious, of course). Version here is 5.8.6 on Debian Stretch.

Cannot confirm such problem on Arch Linux, plasma 5.12.5. I can open any applet from system tray after I switch virtual desktops using the pager applet or a keyboard shortcut.

I must admit I haven't seen the problem in a long time.
Closing as fixed then.
Just updated my system to Debian buster which ships KDE Frameworks 5.46.0 and still have this issue.
