Description Gregor Mi 2017-08-19 10:23:22 UTC
In former times I remember that it was possible to open the System Tray Settings using the right mouse button. Do I remember falsely or was this access method removed?

(I tried a bit and found out that by Unlock Widgets > Panel settings > move mouse over System Tray > click the button with the Configure icon, the System Tray Settings can still be reached.)

Right-click the "show hidden icons" arrow?
Comment 2 Gregor Mi 2017-08-19 11:58:36 UTC
Ah :) ...some time ago I checked the "Always show all entries" which made the arrow button disappear and I forgot about it up to now.

Before I wrote this report I found myself trying hard to click exactly between two tray icons to find a spot where the system tray context menu might be located :-).

This is what my panel currently looks like

What about always keep the area with the "show hidden icons" arrow to have a convenient place to access system tray settings and maybe also related configuration dialogs? (see also screenshot of my current system tray. Since I have a even number of icons there is no free place left where one could right-click to access settings)

the only way to open tray settings when "show all entries" is checked and widgets are blocked that I know is increase panel height (temporarily unblock widgets to do it) to create a bit of empty space below tray icons. Right click on this empty space shows the option to tray settings.

@Dr. Chapatin: please note that in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=383692#c0 I described another more generic method (although at first it was not obvious to me that the icon is clickable)

Yes, your method works if widgets are unblocked.
My method works even if widgets are blocked and "always show all entries" is checked.

We could add the "System Tray Settings" entry to the item context menus like it's done in Task Manager where you also easily end up without an empty space to access its main context menu. However, that probably wouldn't work with Status Notifier Items and would somewhat clutter the menus :/

I also thought about the "add a settings action to each menu" and also thought about the clutter it would cause :(. (Although clutter seems to me to be a bit better than otherwise hidden functionality.)

Was the following idea already discussed?

What about adding a general "Settings" item to the system tray (with the typical gear or screw-wrench icon)? This would lead to:

1) one more (non-empty) item in the tray
2) have the settings directly visible
3) no need for right mouse button; the left would be enough
4) have a place for more than just the System Tray Settings, e.g. (my personal favorite) a direct access to the Display Settings (which comes in handy for multi-monitor scenarios).
5) if it was implemented as a QML popup (like most of the other Plasma items) then one could add other settings related items (like System Settings or System Info) and arrange them in a nice way (e.g. tile buttons; similar to the customizable area of the Android drop down settings panel [1], but not necessarily with the user-customization feature)

I vote for "add a settings action to each menu"

There are multiple ways to get to the configuration screen in Plasma 18.0 when you have all items always shown:
- Right-click on the pixel abutting the screen edge > Click the "Configure" context menu item
- Enter global edit mode, click on the panel toolbox button (the two sliders icon that used to be always visible) > click on or hover over the systray widget > click "Configure...
