in my Debian 9 Installation in a VirtualBox 5.1.26 the KDE-Plasma Desktop don't work with 3D-acceleration. Only without 3D-acceleration it work well. But without 3D-acceleration the Xfce-Desktop with Compiz/Emerald don't work. In Debian 8 the KDE-Plasma work well with 3D-acceleration.
"Does not work" is not a bug report. Please ask in the forum of your distribution how to provide console output or log files. From your description, it is not even clear which component of the KDE software fails with your VirtualBox setup. Please also check pure QtQuick/QML applications.

The problem is similar as on KDE-Plasma in Kubuntu 15.04 (Show https://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/plasma-5-in-virtualbox-nur-ohne-guestadditions/#post-7672693 from Juli 2015). KDE-Plasma has an conflict with 3D-acceleration in VirtualBox.
That problem is also in Kubuntu 17.04. I think, that problem is inherent for the whole Debian family. Other distributions like Manjaro know this problem not.
I can confirm this problem with opensuse tumbleweed, virtualbox running on windows 7 x64 host.

I think this problem is always in KDE and Virtualbox with 3D-acceleration.

I've been using Plasma 5 on VirtualBox with 3D acceleration enabled daily at work, for several monts and seems to be working quite nicely. So maybe WORKSFORME?
