Description Nate Graham 2017-08-01 17:48:07 UTC
Currently it's possible to *sort of* use the screen locker as an old-school screensaver, which many people (myself included) like and want. But there's no way to get rid of the password prompt and user picture from the middle of the screen, where they obscure whatever picture or visual effect the user has chosen.

It would be nice if there was an option to make the password prompt and user picture disappear after a few seconds, and only display again when there's any keyboard or mouse input.

If there are already solid plans to implement a real screensaver independent of the lock screen, please feel free to close this bug.

I would actually appreciate this. An idea is if the wallpaper plugin could opt-in for that, so the slideshow will do that but not the default plain color background.
Comment 2 Nate Graham 2017-08-01 17:57:29 UTC
Yes, that would be ideal. Other plugins like the picture-of-the-day ones would also benefit.
Comment 3 Martin Flöser 2017-08-01 18:47:29 UTC
I don't see a need for adding an option for this. It's very specific and would only work with the one look and feel package that does support it.

Given that I think the better solution is to have a dedicated look and feel package which does exactly that.

Is there a bugzilla ticket tracking that, or adding a dedicated screensaver?

...with the Plasma 5.9:

Adding to the plasma lock screen a semitransparent (color: "#F2000000") rectangle. The lock screen texts are on the rectangle and moving out the sight when not needed.

The rectangle is moving:
- up when up arrow is pressed
- down when the down arrow is pressed.
- mouse movement will also trigger the down movement.
- after 3 minute inactivity the rectangle is sliding out of sight.

Same with the SDDM theme: https://store.kde.org/p/1174674/

Hey, that's not too bad! It would be great if that kind of functionality was built in.
Comment 7 Martin Flöser 2017-08-02 05:10:09 UTC
Concerning built in: won't happen. We made the functionality to easily install themes. This is way better than adding a thousand knobs for all the special features users request.
Comment 8 Nate Graham 2017-08-02 10:49:13 UTC
This isn't about SDDM themes but rather about the screen locker. The screen locker system settings module has an easy way to get new wallpapers, but that's not what's being requested here. Are you saying that the appropriate product for this request is the Breeze theme itself?
Comment 9 Martin Flöser 2017-08-02 15:02:47 UTC
I did not talk about sddm and I did not talk about breeze. I talked about look and feel packages. You can install a look and feel package which provides a lock screen exactly as you wish. You can theme any aspect of the look and feel of the lock screen.

But I don't want to change the look and feel of the whole system. I like the Breeze look and feel the way it is. I just want one small change to the way the screen locker works. Forking the Breeze look and feel to implement that one change seems awfully heavyweight.

Forcing a config option on all users (that is millions) for a visual change you want is even more awfully heavyweight.
