Description Matthias 2017-07-14 07:58:44 UTC
Currently does it look like Kmymoney is unmaintained and still in its KDE SC 4 days on the homepage:

https://kmymoney.org/

761 commits difference between 4.8 and the current git build means its time for a release to me. Its super usable.

There is a new version of AqBanking as well, by the way:

Comment 1 Jack 2017-07-14 14:53:04 UTC
Why do you say it looks unmaintained? If you followed the mailing list and bugzilla, you would know there it lots of activity, including plans for a 4.8.1 release, likely the last KDE4 release other than bug fixes, and lots of activity towards a 5.0 (KDE Frameworks) release.
Comment 2 Matthias 2017-07-15 18:47:28 UTC
And when you look on the homepage?

I know there is lots of activity, why there is no official kf5 release yet?

When it works, what it does?
Comment 3 Jack 2017-07-15 21:36:56 UTC
I don't understand your comment about the homepage. Yes, we could be a lot more verbose about plans and work, but we'd rather put that time into the work itself. I will see about getting some statement that a Frameworks version is planned. Remember, everyone on the team is a volunteer.

There is no release because it is not ready. Not all functionality has been fully ported to Frameworks. As soon as that is done, there will be a release.

I don't understand your third question. Version 5 will do almost the same as 4.8, that upgrade will be mainly about supporting Frameworks, not adding functionality.
Comment 4 Matthias 2017-07-17 10:57:59 UTC
I mean its far enough to release a version.
Its in productive usage here for years.
Currently, it seems like KmyMoney is not in development anymore.
Users just look often at the page of KDE and so on.
Not on Github. Plus, much package maintainers refuse to use the new version, even when they ship Plasma5 with all the kf5 packages, which create conflicts again.

What speaks against a pre release or something?
Comment 5 Matthias 2017-07-17 21:35:50 UTC
Plasma also do not provide all features from its KDE SC 4 incarnation and its officially released.. ;)
Comment 6 Micha Lenk 2017-09-10 21:47:16 UTC
The Qt maintainers for Debian [announced] their plans to remove Qt4 in the next stable Debian release (Debian Buster) for very compelling reasons.

[announced] <https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2017/08/msg00006.html>

While there apparently are users out there using the KF5 version for production already, there seem to be some uncertainty about how ready the KF5 version is for production use. IMHO this uncertainty mainly stems from the fact that there is no KF5 version out yet.

Jack, you said in comment #3:
> There is no release because it is not ready. Not all functionality has been
> fully ported to Frameworks. As soon as that is done, there will be a release.

Do we have a clue what exactly is missing for a KF5 release? Can the Randa meetings be used to come up with some kind of a road map for the first KF5 release? Is the first KF5 release expected to happen in months, years or decades?
Comment 7 Jack 2017-09-11 02:07:29 UTC
A definitive answer needs to come from one of the developers (I do documentation, not code) but my best guess is that the timeframe is months, not longer, and I really do want to go to Randa, but it won't happen this year. However, I suspect that would be a good venue for this discussion as I believe more than one of the developers will be there. It would also be good if someone could put together a list of the features and details which have not yet been ported. I don't think there are any open quality issues with what has been ported, I think it is just a question of whether you require any particular feature which has not been ported, such as mapping a new online account for OFX access.

To make it clear: 7 Dec 2014 is the date, since when our complete distro switched to the frameworks branch. If you ask me, what is to do:

a) Release an alpha/beta version now.
b) Remove the dependency to kdelibs4support.
Comment 9 Micha Lenk 2017-09-27 18:12:42 UTC
When is a first alpha/beta release based on the frameworks branch expected to happen?
Comment 10 Sebastian 2017-12-24 18:09:15 UTC
Would any dev mind giving an update on this?
Comment 11 Micha Lenk 2018-01-07 21:29:29 UTC
Dear kmymoney developers,

the need for a alpha/beta released has been confirmed already in comment #8, almost 4 months ago. I fear that if no official kf5 based release is available before the next Debian stable freeze, kmymoney won't be included at all, not even in the current stable version (in fact it already got removed from Debian buster because of the Qt4 removal). This will most likely result in kmymoney not being available in derivative distrubutions like Ubuntu as well.

For early feedback on what is available already right now, a kf5 based alpha/beta release would be really helpful.

Cheers,
Micha

Please see https://blog.bembel.net/2018/01/rome-wasnt-built-in-a-day/ for the release plan towards 5.0. I hope this will be early enough for the next debian release. If not, please let us know.
