I am experiencing intermittent screen blinking/flashing on my Dell Latitude 5480 laptop. I am running: KDE neon 5.9 user edition KDE Plasma: 5.9.5 Ubuntu: 16.04.2 Qt: 5.7.1 Problem: The blinking (screen goes quickly black) occurs on the laptop screen. Blinking occus even when there are no external monitors, and also occurs on any external monitors when they are plugged in. On the external monitors, the blinking is worse, such that the screen goes black for a second or two. Blinking on the monitor and laptop screens is not synchronized, ie, the laptop screen will blink quickly, and sometime later the external monitor will also blink, more slowly. Repeats frequently so that the laptop is not usable. Solutions already tried: Running these linux kernels: the ubuntu 16.04 default 4.8 kernel, the hwe kernel, the hwe edge kernel (4.10), and the 4.12 rc2 kernel (ubuntu mainline). Changing the compositer settings (using system system settings gui, tried all possible combs (xrender, opengl 2.0, opengl 3.1, trying full screen repaints only, and disabling the compositer altogether). Installing the Intel graphics update tool, and updating all the graphics packages. Installing firmware from intel: kbl_dmc_ver1_01, kbl_guc_ver9_14, kbl_huc_ver02_00_1810 Hardware (from lshw): H/W path Device Class Description ======================================================== system Latitude 5480 (07D0) /0 bus 0D0XXK /0/0 memory 64KiB BIOS /0/45 memory 16GiB System Memory /0/45/0 memory 16GiB SODIMM Synchronous 2400 MHz (0.4 ns) /0/45/1 memory DIMM [empty] /0/4b memory 256KiB L1 cache /0/4c memory 1MiB L2 cache /0/4d memory 8MiB L3 cache /0/4e processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7820HQ CPU @ 2.90GHz /0/100 bridge Intel Corporation /0/100/2 display Intel Corporation /0/100/4 generic Intel Corporation /0/100/14 bus Sunrise Point-H USB 3.0 xHCI Controller /0/100/14/0 usb1 bus xHCI Host Controller /0/100/14/0/3 bus USB 2.0 Hub /0/100/14/0/3/1 bus USB 2.0 Hub /0/100/14/0/3/1/3 input USB Optical Mouse /0/100/14/0/3/1/4 input Natural /0/100/14/0/6 communication Bluetooth wireless interface /0/100/14/0/b multimedia Integrated_Webcam_HD /0/100/14/1 usb2 bus xHCI Host Controller /0/100/14.2 generic Sunrise Point-H Thermal subsystem /0/100/15 generic Sunrise Point-H LPSS I2C Controller #0 /0/100/15.1 generic Sunrise Point-H LPSS I2C Controller #1 /0/100/17 storage Sunrise Point-H SATA controller [AHCI mode] /0/100/1c bridge Sunrise Point-H PCI Express Root Port #2 /0/100/1c/0 wlp1s0 network Intel Corporation /0/100/1c.2 bridge Sunrise Point-H PCI Express Root Port #3 /0/100/1c.2/0 generic Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. /0/100/1c.4 bridge Sunrise Point-H PCI Express Root Port #5 /0/100/1d bridge Sunrise Point-H PCI Express Root Port #9 /0/100/1d/0 storage Non-Volatile memory controller /0/100/1f bridge Sunrise Point-H LPC Controller /0/100/1f.2 memory Memory controller /0/100/1f.3 multimedia Intel Corporation /0/100/1f.4 bus Sunrise Point-H SMBus /0/100/1f.6 enp0s31f6 network Ethernet Connection (5) I219-LM /1 power DELL GD1JP65
I also had the blinking problem with KDE Neon User Edition 5.9 on Ubuntu 16.04.2. The screen just blacks out for a second, as if I had just blinked my eyes. It did it all the time but seemingly with random amounts of time between blinks. I also have Intel integrated graphics but on a Lenovo T510. # lshw -C video *-display description: VGA compatible controller product: Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 2 bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0 version: 02 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom configuration: driver=i915 latency=0 resources: irq:26 memory:f2000000-f23fffff memory:d0000000-dfffffff ioport:1800(size=8) memory:c0000-dffff # My problem seemed to be linked to the kernel version, popping up sometime after 4.1, and disappearing sometime between 4.11.3 and 4.12-rc2.
Is it still happening in Plasma 5.18 or later?
