I am also wondering, why bugs.kde.org tells me 5.8.4 is the oldest supported version, while my up to date kubuntu 16.10 has kwin 5.7.5 installed - this sound wrong for me. - Unusual behavior I noticed: The screen was off for tty7 (off - not black color displayed), a switch to tty1 and switch back to tty7 appears to restart kwin. And I was able to logon again. No session state seems to be lost (all programms were stil opened).
