Description Alex 2017-03-03 07:57:12 UTC
Currently KDE doesn't have color management GUI enabled by default. It would be nice to have this preinstalled in Neon same as in Ubuntu/Gnome/Windows.

We only ship a very minimal set of software pre-installed, based around choices made by Plasma and VDG teams. colour management is an advanced tool most users have no need or understanding of. colord-kde depends on gnome-color-manager which pulls in lots of extra deps.

Haven't noticed that it depends on gnome-color-manager. Minimal set of packages is always better, thank you.

On Manjaro 17.1.12 KDE, colord-kde does not require gnome-color-manager. It's only an optional dependency for CALIBRATING the screen, and colord-kde's dialogue teaches user about this fact very well.

colord-kde's most important function is to ASSIGN color profiles to displays. It does not require gnome-color-manager to perform this function.

By not intalling colord-kde by default we take away the ability to assign color profile to displays. This is an ESSENTIAL function on every modern operating system. There is a reason why Windows, macOS, GNOME all has this very basic function built-in by default.

I strongly suggest:
1) We reconsider the inclusion of colord-kde by default
2) We tell distros that: gnome-color-manager is only a optional dependency
3) If (1) and (2) are not feasible, keep "Color Corrections" page visible even when colord-kde is absent, with instructions about installing colord-kde can enable this page.

you'll need to convince Harald I think

But does assigning a profile actually have an impact with Plasma 5? The (experimental) color correction capabilities were removed from KWin.

Yes, I can observe obvious color change before-after assigning a color profile. On my Dell U2417H, I can switch between the default profile and the calibrated profile and saw obvious change in color and contrast. Maybe it color management system has to do with colord, not kwin.
