Occasionally "rotate left" or "rotate right" works, but almost always Digikam crashes.

You should definitely change to version 5 in general. Philip maintains a Ubuntu PPA
https://launchpad.net/~philip5/+archive/ubuntu/extra/
or you always find the most recent version at
https://www.digikam.org/download

To check this specific issue, please try to reproduce the issue with the pre-release Appimage from
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BzeiVr-byqt5Y0tIRWVWelRJenM
Just download the file, make it executable and execute it.

digiKam 5.5.0 is released officially

digiKam 5.6.0 is now release and available as bundle for Linux, MacOS and Windows.

Can you check if problem still exists with this version ?

Not reproducible with 5.7.0 and no more user feedback. Closed.
