Description nono31393 2017-02-09 13:25:46 UTC
Hi,

Until yesterday, I was running KDE Plasma 5.8.5. I tried upgrading to the latest version from the Archlinux repository (5.9.1).
Once the update done, I shut down the computer (a Dell XPS L502X laptop), and try to restart it.
I arrive on the splash screen, type my password and press enter to login.

I see the new logo appearing and the wheel spinning. After about 30 seconds, the wheel stops spinning and nothing happens.

I had a similar issue in one of the first releases of 5.8 (see post at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=218596). I was only able to login about 1 out of 5 times. With the following updates, it progressively got better, up to a point of 90% of the time I login successfully the first time (other times I have to restart once and it works).

As the problem seemed to happen a lot more on 5.9.1, I decided to downgrade the packaged to 5.8.5 for now.

If you need any more details like log files or anything do not hesitate to ask.

Deleting the content of .config, .cache and .local seems to have done the trick.

I have not been stuck on the splashscreen of 5.8 for a few days now.
I'll try upgrading again to 5.9 and see after a couple of days if is fixed too and stable.

hi, which kernel version do you use?
I have similar issue with latest Plasma and with kernel 4.10

If you've gone and deleted all possible traces of what could be used to debug this, there's not a lot we can do about this.

Next time just move ~/.config to .config.old instead of just deleting it.

Freezing on the splash screen implies plasmashell is failing to start.
Next time, wait 30 seconds (or switch to another terminal and killall ksplash_qml)

Then see if krunner starts with alt+space.

If it does, try running "plasmashell" manually and see what happens.

~/.xsession-errors is a useful log.

Please reset this bug to unconfirmed when you have some info, currently there's nothing to go on.
