Description Piotr 2016-10-18 17:09:31 UTC
It worked fine with kubuntu 14.04 and digikam 4.x, after moving to kubuntu 16.x and digikam5 (form Philip Johnsson ppa) it just does not work. The SD memory card is plugged into computer slot, card is shown in the tray, I choose 'Donwload photos with digikam' (free translation from Polish) and nothing happens.

When I start digikam manually, the import from this SD card works fine.

Reproducible: Always

Problem is not reproducible here (openSUSE). Works open with file manager from tray?

Work perfectly here too...

Sound like a desktop integration problem in your distro.

I guess you are right.

Gilles, what distro are you using? Maybe it is time to move to something more stable than kubuntu 16.x BTW does your gwenview has kipi plugins working? Not working here of course ;-) Automount cifs shares at boot not working on wifi network.

No Kubuntu here. Mageia Linux...

The answer from digikam5 package maintainer is in short: Kubuntu 16 is prepared for digikam4 and simply has no idea that digikam5 exists in the system. So tray task tries to run not installed digikam4 and ignores digikam5.

"simply has no idea that digikam5 exists"

Seriously... Kubuntu is KDE based and managed by KDE team if i remember. If Kubuntu :

- do not know that digiKam (note the 'K' inside) have been updated this summer to 5.0.0 after 2 years of vigorous development.
- do not know that digiKam is hosted by KDE project.
- do not know that digiKam is based and use KF5 frameworks.

... well, you can leave quickly this Linux distribution...

Well, kubuntu it is actually ubuntu with 'k'. So if in 16.04 LTS released somewhere about 04.2016 there is still digikam 4, I guess I should consider moving somwhere else. gwenview (qt5) does not have kipi-plugins because in the distro they are still kde4 based.

Well this is typically a distro problem, not digiKam one.

The alternative for you, without to use another distro, is to use the AppImage digiKam bundle which will be release with next 5.3.0.

Currently it's in beta stage, for testing. If you want to be able to use it with SD card reader, you need to accept the desktop integration question at first run. I tested here with an old CentOS 6.8 with Gnome, and it's work fine.

Please test and give me a feedback.

Well, digikam 5.3 works, but there was no question about desktop integration.

Another thing I have just noticed, when in slide show mode digikam still can't play video files. I'v seen this bug (?) was reported to digikam4 some time ago. Why it is still a problem?

The viewing experience (I mean displaying images in final form, full screen etc) is not as good as in for example gwenview. I'm not sure where can I report the ideas to improve (from my point of view of course) this experience?

Thanks for the report.

Video support is currently disabled in this bundle, until we found a more simpler way to handle video format thatn QT5::Multimedia.

With this framework under Linux, GStreamer is used in background and it's a BIG puzzle to bundle. Impossible to do . Under Windows and OSX, Qt5::multimedia delegate the video to extra codec that user need to install as extra packages.

We plan to use a solution based on FFMpeg, but it's not yet done. Perhaps for 5.4.0 or 5.5.0 release.

About the possible preview improvements, open a new file in this bugzilla.

By the way that AppImage fix the problem with USB notification about SDCard/camera support, this can give you a solution for this entry without to report this problem as UPSTREAM to Kubuntu team.
