Description Michael D 2016-10-17 11:39:10 UTC
Kate used to always open documents in a tab from e.g. Dolphin, no matter which virtual desktop it was on. Now it will open a new window/instance on the desktop from where it's opened.

Kate version 16.08.2

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Have only one instance of Kate open on virtual desktop x
2. Open a document in kate from e.g. Dolphin on virtual desktop y

Actual Results:
Document opens in a new instance of kate on desktop y (assuming y and x are distinct)

Expected Results:
Document opens in the preexisting instance on desktop x

Hi there! I'm a bug triager from the KDE Bugsquad.

I tested this on Kate 18.08 and was able to confirm the behavior you reported. Developers, is this expected behavior now?

KDE Plasma Version: 5.13.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.49.0
Qt Version: 5.11.1

Same here, still!

This behavior could be useful but only under certain circumstances.
There should be a more general approach to aim for a possibility where one could define window rules for that.
But it should not be the default behavior!

The observed behavior is intended.
But if you provide some patch to make this configurable, I would accept it.

I noticed that on wayland it works differently: new documents open in a pre-existing instance no matter the desktop (so in the unintended way). I actually thought someone fixed this "bug".

I'm Using kate 4:18.08.0-1 on Debian Sid and hit a similar problem. For some days, kate opens a new window for each document opened from the command line.

Before that, it opens them as tab, which is the desired behavior.

Is that a regression or is there a new configuration option? Thanks!

Is this on separate virtual desktops? As this is what the original request was about.

Dear user, this wish list item is now closed, as it wasn't touched in the last two years and no contributor stepped up to implement it.

The Kate/KTextEditor team is small and we can just try to keep up with fixing bugs.

Therefore wishes that show no activity for a years or more will be closed from now on to keep at least a bit overview about 'current' wishs of the users.
If you want your feature to be implemented, please step up to provide some patch for it.

If you think it is really needed, you can reopen your request, but keep in mind,
if no new good arguments are made and no people get attracted to help out to implement it,
it will expire in a year again.

We have a nice website https://kate-editor.org that provides all the information needed to contribute, please make use of it.

e.g. see the information at https://kate-editor.org/join-us/ for details

Greetings
Christoph Cullmann
