Description Jonas Thiem 2016-09-13 10:57:09 UTC
The desktop corner trigger for showing all windows should also darken screen with just a single window. Using the desktop corner becomes quite an intuitive action over time about which you don't think so much, so it kind of "happens" intuitively and I might even use it when there is just a single application open. However, nothing visually happening at all as a result is then very irritating and feels very inconsistent.

I understand this was probably meant to be "smart" by not doing anything when there are no windows to switch between, but I see no obvious benefit in this supposed smart behavior and it results in inconsistency and possibly even confusion (for new users trying to test if this functionality is available similar as seen in GNOME 3) Therefore I think KDE shouldn't be smart here just for the benefit of being smart when there is no real reason and it is potentially confusing users.

Therefore, please make the "hot corner" action for seeing all windows on the desktop always trigger the window overview with darkened desktop & descriptions over the windows, even when there is just one window.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a single window only
2. Move mouse to top-left corner (with the default of show all windows on desktop hot corner action)

Actual Results:
Nothing happens

Expected Results:
Overview is shown in visually the same way as for multiple windows, even for just a single window

After 3 years, it seems there's not much interest in this feature, but Present Windows is getting some improvements lately, so I'll hold out hope that this might get changed.

Without visual feedback that the effect has been invoked, I often re-push the mouse into the corner. This usually happens when I've stretched my hand to the limit of my range of motion or when I bump into the laptop, and I'm not sure I've pushed far enough to trigger the effect.

The 'glow' effect at screen edges could serve as visual feedback, but it isn't consistent with the visual effect of Present Windows, and it's otherwise just distracting so I keep it turned off.

I don't understand, if you only have one window open why would you try to activate it?

Because the user may just simply forget that they've only got one window open at a given time. Having multiple windows open is so common that mousing into the corner becomes an habitual response.

This is especially likely if I've been opening and closing a lot of windows in the course of working, and frequently invoking PW to navigate. I don't scan the taskbar prior to mousing into the corner every time, because that's usually redundant.

As for visual indicators in the taskbar, when using Icons Only Task Manager and pinned programs, the visual cue that there are multiple windows open is poor, especially with some color schemes. That's mostly a separate discussion, though.

I can confirm this also happens here and confuses me a lot. I keep retrying to hit the corner, thinking I'm just not triggering the effect correctly, until I realize I had already closed all the other window(s).

I think Present Windows effect should activate even if there are no open windows, just like Desktop Grid effect for one virtual desktop or Activity overview in GNOME:
* when there are no open windows and when all open windows are minimized, visually the desktop looks almost the same (especially if the taskbar is hidden), so pressing a shortcut to activate Present Windows effect when there are no open windows leads me to believe that I pressed the wrong shortcut; this behavior takes some getting used to
* uniform behavior
* easy switching from GNOME to KDE (and vice versa)

It now does in Plasma 5.22
