Description roger peppe 2016-08-24 11:54:05 UTC
Background: I upgraded to a new laptop and copied all my Konversation configuration files from my old laptop (running Konversation 1.5-master, ubuntu 14.04) to the new laptop (running Konversation 1.6, ubuntu 16.04).

I changed my existing notifications to refer to sound files that exist in the new machine (under /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/notifications), but Konversation won't play them when clicking the triangular play icon or when the notification gets triggered.

When it tries to play the sound, it prints the following text to the console:

WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin could not be loaded
WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin could not be loaded
WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin could not be loaded
WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin could not be loaded
    WARNING: Phonon::createPath: Cannot connect  Phonon::MediaObject ( no objectName ) to  Phonon::AudioOutput ( no objectName ).
WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin could not be loaded
WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin could not be loaded

Other apps play the sound files just fine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. select a sound file in the notifications settings
2.click play

Actual Results:
no sound

Expected Results:
sound plays

Thanks for the report Roger. I've just assigned a sound to a notification and clicked play and I have sound.

Can you please test and confirm if this issue is still occurring or if this bug report can be marked as resolved.

I've set the bug status to "needsinfo" pending your response, please change back to "reported" or "resolved" when you respond, thanks.

I'm using another laptop now from when I first reported the bug (an X1 Carbon running Ubuntu 20.04.01) and I don't use IRC much these days, but I can still reproduce the issue. As an example, I chose the file /usr/share/sounds/gnome/default/alerts/sonar.ogg. I verified that this file can be played fine by other apps on the system, but no sound is made when clicking the "play" button in the notification settings.

Please let me know if there's any other information you'd like which might help you diagnose this problem.

Updating the status to "Confirmed" because this still appears to be a bug.

Works here on openSUSE TW in a Plasma session as well a Gnome session.

What are the other apps you are testing with? Any other KF/Qt-based apps where you could test things in the notification dialog for comparison? In general, this would be a bug with the respective library providing the dialog though, thus already reassigning to that product.
