Running startplasmacompoitor, the desktop and applications all appear and seem to be set-up and running properly, but then immediately, the mouse cursor freezes and startplasmacompositor exits. Seems Qml crashes KWin, and then KWin takes the rest with it. Can you retrieve the kwin crash backtrace?
This crash is no longer occurring, after explicitly selecting the Breeze window decorations, at Martin's suggestion. But there is a crash backtrace at https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=366689#c2 If kwin_wayland can be made to work with window decorations other than Breeze, that would be helpful.

I don't know the current status with respect to Breeze window decorations. This bug report is 2 years old now. The KDE team can decide what functionality might currently be expected with respect to running kwin_wayland with various decorations, whether to expect that to work, or not. Let's close this, then.
