Description Guo Yunhe 2016-08-07 09:43:13 UTC
I have a 6 year VLC user. VLC is always using this icon:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e6/VLC_Icon.svg/2000px-VLC_Icon.svg.png

But the VLC icon in Breeze is too different from the original icon. I cannot find any connection between. A player window can be any video player.

Reproducible: Always

I have a Breeze icon with VLC logo, but I can't add it to Breeze icons repository because:

1) The original VLC logo/icon seems to be licensed as CC BY-SA 3.0+ [1]. Thought I'm not sure.
2) I don't know if CC BY-SA is compatible with Breeze icons LGPLv3

So, do you know if I can release a modified version (in Breeze style) of VLC logo as LGPLv3?

https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/licensing-considerations/compatible-licenses/

Here is a official description: GPLv3 is compatible with CC BY-SA 4.0. But LGPLv3 is not compatible with CC BY-SA 3.0

Since this icon is included in VLC source code, it is already licensed under GPLv2. But not LGPL.

In this case, I think it is better to remove this icon from Breeze icon set and use original icon. It is much better.

This is incorrect.

as there is no licence issue should we leave the generic one or should Alex L (or someone else) work on a more vlc specific icon?

So, what is it licensed under? Can we create a Breeze icon based on the original VLC icon under LGPLv3?

On Wikimedia Commons VLC icons seems licensed under GPL[1]. Is this correct?

About usability, I think that for people not knowing VLC it's impossible to understand it's a media player, because of its name (VLC) and its icon (an orange traffic cone). The current Breeze icon suggest a media player and the "play" symbol in it is orange because of the original logo color.

So the icon I want to submit combine both the media player frame and the original cone, so it should be recognizable by everyone as media player / VLC media player.

This is a good solution I think.
