Description fournierjc 2016-08-01 21:34:44 UTC
Application: kded4 (4.14.2)
KDE Platform Version: 4.14.2
Qt Version: 4.8.6
Operating System: Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64 x86_64
Distribution: Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 (jessie)

-- Information about the crash:
- What I was doing when the application crashed:
Running Debian Jessie (Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64)
Running KDE SC Version 4.14.2
Iniate vnc session (using vnc4server)
see the crash screen as soon as connect through vnc (running VNC viewer on Windows 7)

- Unusual behavior I noticed:
KDE Daemon closes unexpectedly.
- I recognize that this is similar to bug 344395 - but KDE 5 is not available for the latest stable version of Debian (which I'm using). Is there no workaround for this?

- Custom settings of the application:
All settings are the defaults. This crash happens 100% of the time

The crash can be reproduced every time.

-- Backtrace:
Application: KDE Daemon (kded4), signal: Segmentation fault
Using host libthread_db library "/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libthread_db.so.1".

Try disabling the KScreen module in systemsettings > Startup and Shutdown > Service Manager.

Thanks for the bug report!

Unfortunately, Plasma 4 is unmaintained upstream, so I'll have to close this bug. If you upgrade to a newer version of Plasma (5.8 has many fixes included).

As to a work-around, it seems that you're using the XRandR 1.1 backend. Now I don't know if Debian stable supports also newer XRandR. You can force kscreen to use the XRandR (instead of the older XRandR1.1 backend by exporting

KSCREEN_BACKEND=XRandR

(This variable has to be set before the session is fully started, as it needs to be picked up by the kded process.)
