My proposal is to adding analogy of two squres while picking a color (Ctrl + LMB while using "Freehand Brush Tool") to the "Minimal shade selector" (Shift + N). One square represent old color, second square represent currently changed color. I will add mockup in comment below. Reproducible: Always

Can you please check the current implementation? I believe it's implemented already and the little square underneath the big one is the old color.
