Currently if you click on the digital date, the calendar appears. If you click somewhere else it disappear. 

Being able to keep it open even if it lose focus would be a real plus (for instance if it is used while writing an email, or booking a trip)

Maybe an option?

There's a pin icon in the top right corner of the digital-clock popup that does exactly that.
