Description arts 2016-06-14 17:47:52 UTC
PROBLEM:
Can't start Kdenlive - click on KL icon in search box, it appears in launcher, click on that and it opens fleetingly and is gone within a second - no way to stop it happening. Shut down and restart - no change. Using a Dell Inspiron Series 15 5559 laptop with 8 gig ram

INITIAL INSTAL OF KDENLIVE - WARNING
During initial install noticed a warning flash by in the terminal about checksum or similar not matching up so might be corrupt. But worked ok.

MOVE TO 16.04 TO GET VIDEO STABILISER TO WORK
But video stabilisation didn't work, and saw that this was considered a bug, answer was to go to Kdenlive 16.04 , then it all worked well. But there were a few warnings about resources being almost gone. So have been careful - using xternal HDD for files now.
Not sure how much space I should have in partition for Kdenlive - have 29G for xt4 and about 3G for swap - should they be larger?

PROBLEM DEVELOPED TONIGHT
Been using it for past day and a half intensively to do my first music video.
Mainly applying many of the effects to the 4'46" clip to see how they looked as I get used to the interface and workings again. Will use some of those for a montage.
Odd crash now and then but ok.
Renders taking up to 10 - 15 mins in H.264 lossless sans audio.
Renders at lower MP4 level were a bit poor patchy pixellated messy so going hi-end.

Kdenlive 16.04 and MLT Installed a few days ago - latest version of MLT 6.2.0 I think
Ran well. Occasional freeze/crash. Mainly ok

* * * Then suddenly about an hour or two ago, just died - froze. Can't start.

RE-INSTALLED USING TERMINAL
So reinstalled using sudo apt-get install kdenlive
Installed/updated itself and asked me to delete some stuff after that
During that process noticed something about some words mispelled 2 x and there was something wrong, and that I need to re-install grub.
That terminal shut itself down before I had a chance to capture it

Found a page about how to do a bug report - hope this is useful for all of us
It has taken me a few weeks to sort out how to set up dual boot, so I could use Kdenlive.
This is not what I had hoped for. Hope we can sort it soon
Comment 1 arts 2016-06-14 17:49:52 UTC
Hi there - realised after first submission that half of the text had accidentally been deleted. So hope this resubmit is ok

-Sorry, re second last para about grub, terminal said I might need to re-install, not that I had to.

Please close the previous, incomplete bug report as RESOLVED INVALID. Thank you very much!
Comment 5 Wegwerf 2016-06-14 18:30:26 UTC
You can run Kdenlive from a terminal window to capture its output.
Comment 6 Wegwerf 2016-06-14 18:30:46 UTC
From which repository are you installing kdenlive and mlt? From stock ubuntu or from kdenlive ppas? If the latter, from which ppa in particular?
Comment 7 arts 2016-06-14 19:45:53 UTC
Hi again
Resending this - was forwarded to another email account and I replied from
there. Just got an email saying the reply was not from the right email
account.

Been up all night - its showing!

Thanks for fast reply - really appreciate it
I am resending this from my arts@little-waiata.co.nz email address
I can't remember exactly where the kdenlive came from - the initial
install - I found a kdenlive.7z file on my system - probably from kdenlive
site or sourceforge.
PPA was from Canonical site and was ppa: kdenlive/kdenlive-testing

Cheers Lorraine

Please refrain from pasting email addresses verbatim. There's a reason email addresses are visible only to logged in visitors. Personally I don't like to get my addresses thrown around without thought.

As for the PDF that's inconvenient. Why not simply pasting the relevant content into a comment here, that's fine. Much easier to read and not everyone likes to download pdfs from unknown sources.

Did you do some update in between? From what you wrote this sounds rathet much more like a system instability that Kdenlive may trigger. What kind of graphics card do you have?

You may try to rename your kdenliverc config file to see if Kdenlive starts again correctly.

Did you check your file system?
Comment 11 Wegwerf 2016-06-14 20:33:48 UTC
Btw ... grub surely doesn't matter to Kdenlive. Please try to focus to the issue at hand. Mass information doesn't always help, but trying to be concise helps us all.

As for trying to start without a kdenliveui.rc: you should find it in $HOME/.local/share/kxmlgui5/kdenlive/kdenliveui.rc -- rename it and try to start Kdenlive again.

Here is content of pdf as requested
Apologies if I am adding stuff that's not needed - I don't know what is relevant and what isn't eg grub thing.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Using Kdenlive 16.04 on Ubuntu 16.04
Dell Inspiron Series 15 5559
Dual boot Windows10/Ubuntu 16.04 recently setup
Video editing – music videos
Being mindful of keeping big files on ext hdd
Had a few messages saying run out of space so emptied trash and moved stuff off site
Not sure if I need to make more space on partition for this
HDD has been operating quite noisily since using Ubuntu on dual boot last two or three days
Noticed a warning re checksum or whatever not matching in all the terminal printout during first install but it turned itself off before I could capture it.
I did a reinstall tonight just using sudo apt-get install kdenlive and it re-installed itself, added some new stuff and asked me to delete some stuff.
Been using it solidly for last 36 hours to render effects on a single clip as I get to know the software. Keeping them small but many 10+ min renders.

I notice two things from the terminal output:

1. Since you are on a non-KDE Ubuntu, some package dependencies are not satisfied. Please make sure that the KDE 5 desktop is installed. Also make sure that the Breeze icon set is installed, oxygen may be required too, but I think Breeze sufficies. Search the forum for more information as I don't konw the required packages. Kick the Ubuntu packagers for doing a bad job.

2. Kdenlive requires OpenGL. If the crash still happens after installing the required icons (which I suspect) then check your graphics card driver as well as associated libraries.

Thanks for that - will try it now
Yes there was a message re missing icons.
I was adding a comment at the same time as you wrote this

Answers some of your prev questions so will add it here now in case its useful
But hopefully the above will clinch it!

Re adding in my email address, yes didn't think that one through, thanks for the nudge

"Re: Did you do some update in between?"
Do you mean Ubuntu - yes it's always updating itself.

"From what you wrote this sounds rather much more like a system instability that Kdenlive may trigger." OK understand what you mean but out of my depth here re experience/knowledge.

"What kind of graphics card do you have?"
Graphics card is Intel® HD Graphics 520 (Skylake GT2) on a 64bit system 8Gb RAM
Intel® Core™ i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz × 4
Purchased as a laptop that could handle sfx software and video editing

"You may try to rename your kdenliverc config file to see if Kdenlive starts again correctly."
Thanks for that info Jean Baptiste
Won't let me rename or create a copy with new name and trash the old one
Get this message ~ You are not the owner, so you cannot change permissions ~
Any tricks for overcoming that? Sudo . . . something?
Searching at the moment but only found stuff from 2011 that must be out of date

"Did you check your file system?"
Sorry not sure what this means

Integrated Intel Graphics? Welcome to the House of Pure Joy. My Intel core i7 mainboard has its integrated graphics disabled for good reasons and I have installed an AMD graphics card. OpenGL support for integrated GPUs may work, sometimes even as required.

There surely is something wrong with your $HOME directory: the kdenliveuirc file needs to belong to you as the owner and it must be writable for you. If not, carefully check your installation. Make sure that your file system is consistent; reboot into a file system check. Then carefully check the ownership and access rights of files inside your $HOME. In particular, check .local and .cache hidden directories. Some things you wrote hint at that somehow your installation got into an inconsistent state. This may, but doesn't need to be, a hardware issue of your laptop. I've seen many laptaps that work more or less with Windows, but cease to work reliably in Linux because there are no vendor-specific drivers that work around wobbly hardware.

I suggest to head over to the Kdenlive forum instead. The bug system is for reporting bugs with concise reports in order to allow developers to fix software bugs in Kdenlive. This doesn't seem to be a software bug but a specific system issue. I'm using Kdenlive from beta ppa on Kubuntu, and it works like a charm.
