Description Lastique 2016-06-01 21:47:17 UTC
Network monitor widget becomes unreadable is placed on a horizontal panel because the network interface name overlaps with the bandwidth readings. The widget has no settings, so there is no way to remove the interface name or adjust font settings or anything.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Add a network monitor widget to a horizontal panel.

Network monitor on a panel

I confirm that I see the same display problem on the network widget monitor.

with the following configuration :
Debian GNU/Linux testing (stretch)
KDE Plasma: 5.6.4
KDE Frameworks: 5.23.0
Qt: 5.6.1
Linux kernel: 4.6.0-1-amd64 (64bits)

Also note that the interface name on this system if much longer than the simple "eth0" of the first screenshot. In this case the interface name if "enp0s31b5"

KDE Plasma network monitor widget with too long interface name covering traffic
Comment 4 Moz 2016-06-28 07:30:06 UTC
Here are some suggestions (those are non-exclusive options) to improve the current situation:

- In the "Parameters" dialog, provide the possibility to rename each interface with a shorter more-human-readable names
- In the "Parameters" dialog, provide an option to only display the transfer rates as "popup" when the pointer overs the widget

Of course there might be better solutions that don't involve any options at all and that provide a good user experience right away for everyone. If so, please let it be known!

And more important than anything else: A big Thank You for the Wonderful software that KDE is!
Comment 5 Moz 2016-06-28 07:33:45 UTC
Right-aligning the transfer rate information might be the easier and faster improvement to do. Let's do that first, what do you think?
Comment 6 Moz 2016-10-14 15:21:07 UTC
On Debian, KDE has updated to Plasma 5.8.0 and this display problem is now no more. So it's fixed.

Can someone close this ticket?

vertical, high-DPI

It's even worse on a vertical task-bar. (This is a 270 DPI screen, so fonts are small already.)

Looks related to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=350672

I've just tested this issue on plasma from git master and I believe the widget has changed since this was reported and can't reproduce the issue.

Can you please test and confirm if this issue is still occurring or if this bug report can be marked as resolved. I'm setting status to "needsinfo" pending your response, please change back to "resolved" or "reported" when you respond, thanks.
Comment 10 Lastique 2020-11-12 14:34:52 UTC
It does look better in my case (on a horizontal panel), as the widget is now much wider and the network interface does not overlap with the network readings. I did not test it on a vertical panel, as others have commented earlier. Thus I will keep the bug open for the other people to comment.

As for me, the widget is taking too much space on the panel. I realize that this was probably what fixed the problem reported here, but as it is I probably won't be using the widget anyway. It would probably be more helpful if the widget offered a way to configure its appearance. For example, disable the network interface name, change the font size, make upload/download bitrates displayed on top of one another instead of horizontally.

Operating System: Kubuntu 20.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.68.0

OS Type: 64-bit
