Description Victor Porton 2016-04-26 19:40:12 UTC
When opening multiple files from an FTP server, it happens too slowly. I suspect this can be speed up.

Not sure that it can be made faster, but sure that the GUI should show a kind of a progress-meter when opening multiple files.

Reproducible: Always

I confirm that the current behaviour of Kate at starting time is rather blocking in some circumstances.
When you open a Kate session that includes many files that are actually stored on other computers, if those computers are not available, it can take up to a quarter for Kate to be ready to use.
The problem is consecutive to the way Kate loads a session. In its current version Kate loads all files before showing up a GUI to the user. Moreover files seem to be opened in sequence (rather then in parallel). It implies that the user will have to wait N times the device timeout where N is the number of files that cannot be opened due to unavailability of the remote devices.
The solution would be not to load the files at session loading time but every time the user selects a tab instead (that particular file would be loaded).

Dear user, this wish list item is now closed, as it wasn't touched in the last year and no contributor stepped up to implement it.

The Kate/KTextEditor team is small and we can just try to keep up with fixing bugs.

Therefore wishes that show no activity for a years or more will be closed from now on to keep at least a bit overview about 'current' wishs of the users.
If you want your feature to be implemented, please step up to provide some patch for it.

If you think it is really needed, you can reopen your request, but keep in mind,
if no new good arguments are made and no people get attracted to help out to implement it,
it will expire in a year again.

We have a nice website https://kate-editor.org that provides all the information needed to contribute, please make use of it.

Patches can be handed in via https://phabricator.kde.org/differential/

Greetings
Christoph Cullmann
