Description Gilles Turgeon 2016-04-23 13:50:26 UTC
When I search for a application in the search tool, Discover rarely find the application. In fact, he almost never find it. Same if the search target is one of the popular application and I can see is icon in the page (GIMP for example).

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Sean Ellis 2016-04-23 19:34:30 UTC
I also see this (Kubuntu 16.04, 64 bit). Example: select the "Systems and Settings" category. The icon for "Synaptic Package Manager" is shown in the first row of displayed applications.

Despite it clearly being present, it cannot be found by name. In the search box, type "package" - zero results. Type "Synaptic" - zero results. Type "Syn" - zero results.

Curiously, if you type "Sy", I get four results, BCache Monitor, plasma5-applets-system-panel, bumblebee-indicator and Lackadaisy. This last one is not even in the selected category.
Comment 2 mathojojo 2016-04-24 11:55:21 UTC
I opened a similar ticket on this bug too 2 days ago... It MUST be resolved as soon as possible, as discover is now the default (and only) app installer installed on Kubuntu.

Kubuntu 16.04 is a LTS... I'm chocked that it has been released with a such feature broken (a newbie would potentially not be able to install anything else with this bug...).

I'm waiting for the correction... In the meanwhile, I will deal with apt-get install and the "reborn" muon package manager.
Comment 3 Aleix Pol 2016-04-25 13:33:58 UTC
Can you please check the debug output? You need to make sure that appstream db information is installed.
Comment 4 Gilles Turgeon 2016-04-25 13:46:01 UTC
I can try to help, but I don't know where to find "debug output". Discovers don't complain or crash. It just don't do the job.
Comment 5 Aleix Pol 2016-04-25 13:50:22 UTC
Start the application from a terminal:
- open konsole
- type plasma-discover and press enter
- wait for it to load and just close it
- copy the text it showed and paste it here.

Thanks!

The qrc: lines begins when discover begin to slide applications in the slide show.

Can you please check if "appstreamcli search chromium" bears results?

Oups, on this machine, Discover find software. It's work correctly. This installation was on ubuntu 15.10 with the ubuntu ppa, so it has the last version of muon just before upgrade to 16.04.

Discover fail to search on my other computeur, a fresh install of kubuntu 160.04. Alas, I have installed Muon with Synaptic on this computer and the search is now working. I can't reproduce the problem.

I will try to install a fresch virtual machine tomorrow.
Comment 10 Gilles Turgeon 2016-04-30 01:41:33 UTC
same answer on 3 computer :

Kubuntu 15.10 --> kubuntu 16.04 (search work)
Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install (search originaly not working, but ok after installing muon)
Kubuntu 16.04 fresh install just after install (search not work)

But in the three cases, appstreamcli return the same answer

As mentionned here : https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362096,

I think that on a fresh install, appstream is not installed, so Discover does not work fine.
But at muon installation, appstream might be added as a dependency.

That's why installing muon appears to resolve Krita's search problem.

Searching Calligra in discover does only list :

- Calligra stage
- Calligra sheets
- Calligra Author

Are missing :
- Calligra Flow
- Calligra Words
- Calligra Plan
- Calligra Karbon

The appstream command list some more apps, but Flow and Words are missing too :

Comment 13 Gilles Turgeon 2016-04-30 10:53:10 UTC
appstream answer on the 3 machines... So it must be installed on a fresh kubuntu. But I don't know if is answer is complete.

A search in Discover on Kubuntu 16.04 (fresh install + muon installed after) for "calligra" return :

Calligra Stage
Keki
Calligra Sheets
Calligra Auteur
Karbon

(and a lot more stuff while I was typing, so it seems to be able to find a lot of thing)

The same search on Kubuntu 16.04 upgrade from 15.10 (muon was on the machine before) return the sames 5 packages list.

Note that theses calligra packages are not installed on my machines, in case that this do a diffrence.

On a fresh installed Kubuntu 16.04, the same search return a empty list. But while I type, Discover return somes results (VLC, Chromium, Firefox, a lot of happy faces and generic icons stuff ... with just "c" ; the list narrow with all other letter entered until "calli". From this point, the list is empty.
Comment 14 Fernando Constantino 2017-02-06 02:00:15 UTC
Just installed kubuntu 16.04, 64 bit and my discover shows nothing at all on most popular, best rating, search and category navigation. It just shows 3 apps on the main slideshow.

The #5 comment command results on this:

Hi! I have the same problem with my 16.04.1, Discover can't searching for software.
I've installed from console muon: apt-get install moun
Discover also can't display a list of the installed tools/packages, with muon not a problem.
