Error raised here means there's something broken with your openGL drivers. One common cause is NVidia's libGL installed, but the NVidia kernel module missing. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 345563 ***
I purged the Nvidia kernel module rebooted the system and now have a 1024x768 resolution. I reinstalled several different release versions of NVidia and get the original black screen plasmashell error results. Running the KDE Driver Manager, it just stalls at "Collecting information about your system". It seems as if the system is now unable to recognize the NVidia card as being present.

(In reply to David Edmundson from comment #2) > Error raised here means there's something broken with your openGL drivers. > One common cause is NVidia's libGL installed, but the NVidia kernel module > missing. > > *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 345563 *** I had usually waited several months to upgrade. I felt safe to upgrade to an LTS release. For the most part, all of my machines were working very well on Kubuntu prior to upgrade. My server has now broken links on the Apache server. It has the black screen. Another machine uses a Bluetooth mouse and Bluetooth stops responding that needs a complete shutdown to recover. All worked so well prior to the upgrade. I try my best to encourage others to use Linux and Kubuntu... for years. Thank you for your great assistance, David Edmundson. I'm sure we will resolve these problems.
