Description Terry Parris 2016-04-21 17:26:47 UTC
When running dolphin from the CLI (through konsole for root access), NO (none) of the icons show up for folders, toolbar, or even the files. ONLY the folder, file name, or toolbar text shows up. In konsole you'll see a scrolling report of missing pixmaps. This only happens when running dolphin as root through konsole. As a normal user, dolphin display is fine. No issues with pixmaps. Also, there is NO single click navigation of folders or files as root.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open konsole
2.Enter sudo dolphin then type your password
3.Dolphin opens with no icons for folders, toolbar, or files.

Actual Results:
I've tried this several times and had the exact same results with this application only. Running other applications (namely kate as root from CLI) does NOT have this issue.

Expected Results:
The only issue I see that I expect to have happened when I opened up dolphin as root is the proper display of toolbar, folder, and file icons as well as single click navigation. Otherwise there is NO other issues with this application.

This was discovered running Kubuntu 16.04 LTS in VirtualBox prior to it's release. Not certain if it will be fixed by the release date. I have also been able to verify this bug via running as a live usb drive on bare metal. I've not loaded this OS on bare metal other than to use it as a live usb drive or in VirtualBox.

Ubuntu does not recommend to use the sudo with the graphical applications: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo

Another bug report: Bug 353263 - No icons show on root session. unable to assign any too - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353263

Error comparison screenshot between kdesudo and normal loads

This has been happening since 15.04 IIRC, I just updated to 16.04 from 15.10 and the problem persists. Using

kdesudo dolphin
kdesudo kate

Brings a version with the completely wrong theme, and in the case of dolphin, no images. I'm attaching a comparison shot between the version opened normally or the on opened with KDESUDO. On the left size of the image you can see the result using kdesudo, on the right side without. I'm calling both using ALT + F2 and typing the command.

dolphin even throws an error message: "The process for the file protocol died unexpectedly."

the same for Kubuntu 16.10 "Yakkety Yak" - Alpha amd64 (20160501)
At least choose fallback theme set with system settings or use gtk
based theme to show icons... like "PCManFM" file manager....

The problem isn't specific to dolphin. Kate is also affected by this. It seems to be related to the qt5/frameworks transition.
