Description Andrew Fomin 2016-04-10 15:53:51 UTC
Firewire selection not latching in configuration. There is no record monitor window in the main GUI or selection in the drop down menu. Also, there is no response to capture device selection in the configuration wizard.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Try selecting firewire in the capture configuration. In my case, I select the HDV option.
2.
3.

Actual Results:
No connection with camcorder. No record monitor window in gui to select the connection.

Expected Results:
The gui should have a record monitor window as in previous versions.

Please do not drop this feature. There are many people that still use tape based camcorders or have large DV libraries. There are few practical options in Linux to capture HDV. I have tried LIVES and found it crashes right away. Kino is hasn't been supported for years and has no HDV capture option.
I have used this option in Kdenlive .9.8 and .9.10 often. If possible, can you make these versions available for download until the issue gets resolved in the latest version?

Hi,

with my new Fedora 24 there is no firewire support anymore!
I updated from Fedora 22, there everything works fine.
dvgrab also works fine, only kdenlive cannot capture from firewire.
Please help!

Regards
Martin

Hi

Unfortunately after the upgrade to KF5, firewire capture was not ported. The team is currently with very limited manpower and this isn't in the roadmap at the moment.

Cheers

Please get it back in when you are able. As you know, there are few
options to import from firewire in Linux. The command line option is there
but is unruly to setup. The only other option I have seen is an old
editing program called "Lives", however, I have been unable to make that
work so far. And Kino only does standard definition.

Thanks

Hi farid,

thanks for the reply - but that would be a showstopper/worst case for my work under Linux: I'm transferring old Super-8-films to DVD for my customers, and therefor I need to view in realtime what's going on.
As Andrew mentioned, Kino is not maintained anymore and so the only workaround at the moment is dvgrab. But with this I can not see in realtime what is recorded.

Do you have another idea what program to use for that task? The last solution would be to use Windows ...

Best regards
Martin

I was hoping there would be a path to down grade back to version 0.9.10
just to be able to use the firewire capture. I am having trouble finding a
package with all the dependencies included.

i will add this as a topic of discussion in our next kdenlive café, but wont/cant guarantee anything positive as the outcome atm. i would suggest though that this could be a community driven issue and maybe you could open a topic in the forum to raise awareness to other users and organize a bounty to attract a kde/qt/c++ dev or maybe appeal to the kde/qt devs and maybe someone shows interest and decides to do it... as i said there is only one active maintainer in the project so hope you understand the situation.

cheers

ok, thank you.

I am sorry to inform you that unfortunately the kdenlive devs cannot work on this. The roadmap has been set with many new powerful features are coming. So firewire has to be a community-lead effort (maybe through a bounty...). If you'd like I can try to help you by spreading the word in the website and other official channels, but you must start and organize this effort.

You can always use dvgrab to capture your tapes.

Cheers

Hi Farid,

ok - I understand that a few people cannot do all work. I use dvgrab now, and try to view the film directly with vlc. vlc is about one second behind, it's not perfect but works after a fashion.
The only reason to use kdenlive (after kino had died) was that it could grab from firewire - so there is no special reason for me to use it in future. Will see ...

Nevertheless, thanks and regards
Martin

If you are not going to support firewire anymore, the least you could do is
provide the .9.10 version in with all dependencies rolled up into a
tarball. Using a command line program gets problematic when you have many
tapes to transfer. All those powerful features are useless if you can't
get your content into the program.
