Description Unknown 2016-03-23 01:45:23 UTC
When using Ubuntu GNOME (GNOME 3.18), the "Open" Dialog box and the "Add Clip" dialog box have button icons missing, and the open dialog box won't allow for proper folder navigation.

See video in URL field for example.

I know that Kdenlive works best in its natural environment, but there are many more users, statistically, who use GNOME and Unity for their primary desktop. Fortunately, with recent enhancements, the look and functionality of Kdenlive across the three major desktops is almost seamless (which is awesome!).

That said, I'd appreciate if this could be looked at before the 16.04 release.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Kdenlive on Ubuntu or Ubuntu GNOME distros: the latest melt .deb builds first, then Kdenlive (I'm not sure if there are any dependencies missing, but other than this issue, Kdenlive runs more than fine.)
2. Open Kdenlive
3. Click "Open" or "Add Clip" or go to the Render window and select the output folder.

Actual Results:
Dialog windows are missing button icons, and navigation functionality isn't working.

Expected Results:
The dialog box to open and operate as it does in KDE Plasma desktop.

Bug discovered while using Kdenlive 16.07.70 latest git master build on Ubuntu GNOME x64, GNOME 3.18.

Navigating through the filesystem is a pretty significant part of interaction between program and operating system, which is the only reason I'm marking this bug as "Major". I know that the feature freeze is soon (if not already); this would be a great fix to konk out before the major release.

Also if this is because of missing dependencies that didn't install with the Kdenlive package, maybe they could be added to the dependency list during install? (I'm not sure how it all works with installing from software centers... or any method for that matter. :) )

If it is a dependency issue and it - for whatever reason - can't be added to the list of dependencies for install, if I can be made aware of what packages are needed, I could contribute some easy step-by-step documentation for users on non-KDE desktops to get things running properly.

Thanks all.

Another small note: the video doesn't seem to show it, but the tooltip shows fine on the buttons the mouse hovers over them.

UPDATE: It looks like this issue only occurs when the Syle in the Settings menu is set to "Breeze". On any other setting, the dialog windows works just fine! You can tell the icons aren't from the Breeze icon theme, which isn't a big deal, but it works. Navigation also works, too; no issues with any of the dropdown menus or functions.

So, only when the Style is set to "Breeze" in Kdenlive are these issues occurring.

Being that there is a possible work-around from within the program, I'm changing this bug from "Major" to "normal". I still think it would be really helpful for Kdenlive's solid reliability image if this could be knocked out before the big release.

UPDATE #2: Running Ubuntu 16.04 beta 2 with Unity 7.4.0. Navigation functionality works fine, but there are still button icons missing when style is set to Breeze. Setting the style to something like Fusion seems to fix the issue.

So, I'm assuming the navigation issue is limited to GNOME, alone. The button icons seem to be across both non-KDE desktops.

UPDATE #3: This issue also occurs on Linux Mint 18 (beta) w/ the Cinnamon interface. I know it's mostly based off of GNOME, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Happens on gentoo as well.

This was a commit fix today on this issue, and it works! There is now an option in the "Settings" menu header to force the Breeze icon theme. Kdenlive will then restart, and the Open and "Add clip" dialog boxes now work properly and have icons! This is fantastic news. Thanks for all your hard work JB!

My last request before I close this bug: it looks like the light breeze icon theme is being used, regardless of if Kdenlive is using the dark theme. So, right now, I have the dark theme, but the breeze icons in the dialog boxes are the light breeze icons. Can it be made so that, when the force breeze icon button is checked/enabled, Kdenlive sees whether the light or dark breeze theme is used, then sets the icons accordingly?

This appears to be the case in stock Unity in Ubuntu 16.04 as well, using the default system theme: Breeze icons are present in the UI, but they don't default to the dark Breeze icons when Kdenlive is using the Dark Breeze UI theme.

On gentoo / XFCE it was solved by starting KDE service in session startup.
Comment 9 Unknown 2016-08-25 17:37:06 UTC
@gletonai, which KDE service was that, specifically? If the service is from a package that's a dependency of Kdenlive upon installation, maybe we can use that for all other desktops, somehow??
Comment 10 gletonai 2016-08-25 19:30:52 UTC
I turned both checkboxes on (see Advanced tab)
http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-session/preferences
X Launch GNOME services on startup
X Launch KDE services on startup

What else this does apart from fixing this for me I dont know for sure...

Jesse, my impression is that this bug report can be closed, is this correct?
Comment 12 Unknown 2016-09-18 01:06:42 UTC
@Wegwerf, not quite, the icons are still showing the light (dark-colored) icons on a dark theme, instead of showing the dark icons (lighter-colored) on the dark theme like they would in Breeze. This needs to be addressed.

Please try with the actual Kdenlive version 18.08.1
